Rumblings Authors Mock, V2.0: Round Two Picks

With round one of the second go-round of the Buffalo Rumblings Authors Mock unveiled yesterday, it's naturally time to move on to round two. For anyone who missed it, each author here is predicting all ten Buffalo Bills picks; the real selections, of course, will be made this coming weekend.

Round two is coming at you right now; round three, rounds four and five, and rounds six and seven will all be posted on successive days, ending this project on Thursday. Without further ado, here are the authors' second-round picks:

Brian Galliford's Pick

2-41: John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame
- I'm of the mind that the Bills need to find a starting tight end in this draft, relegating Robert Royal back to his more suitable #2 TE role. I've been a big advocate of Texas A&M's Martellus Bennett, and still have him as the top tight end available this year, but he could very well be gone by the time the Bills pick in the second round. Carlson is not quite as quick but is tougher after making the catch, has great hands, and works hard as a blocker. He and Bennett are the two best all-around tight end prospects available this year, but Carlson was more productive in college. I'd be nearly as happy with Carlson on board as I would with Bennett.

Sireric's Pick

2-41: Fred Davis, TE, USC
- I don't think that it's a stretch to say that Davis will still be on the board at #42. I think Davis has slipped a little bit behind Martellus Bennett and maybe even Dustin Keller, but both of those guys could be gone a this point. Don't let a few dropson his Pro Day and at the Combine fool you - Davis is a fine pass catcher and will be a solid NFL TE. The Bills go by game tape, not combine or pro day workouts, and Davis finished his career as the all time leading receiver as a TE in the history of USC. Think about that, we aren't talking South Florida, we're talking USC. If you finish your career as the all time anything at USC that's impressive.

Jri111's Pick

2-41: Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma
- The Bills get the guy they really like in the second. Could easily go TE here if the Bills choose WR in round 1, but since they didn't, they have to address WR. Also, I believe they like a number of TE's that would be available in the third round, including John Carlson and Kellen Davis.

Kurupt's Pick

2-41: Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma
- I can really see Kelly's stock dropping come Saturday after his outbursts and poor 40 time(s). He is likely the most NFL-ready WR, or right up there, so he will be able to step right in for us. There's a decent chance he'll go earlier than this, but it's not a given. If the Bills can add Harvey and Kelly with their first 2 picks and not have to make any trades to do so, I think we should all be rather thrilled. I know I would be. If Kelly is gone here, I would take Hardy, if available, or Jordy Nelson.

So there's round two for you, folks. Unlike last time, where the four of us had pretty similar picks throughout, we're seeing a lot more deviation this time around. Here are the top two picks of each of the four authors:

Brian Galliford
1-11. Devin Thomas, WR, Michigan State
2-41. John Carlson, TE, Notre Dame

sireric
1-11. Mike Jenkins, CB, South Florida
2-41. Fred Davis, TE, USC

jri111
1-11. Antoine Cason, CB, Arizona
2-41. Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma

Kurupt
1-11. Derrick Harvey, DE, Florida
2-41. Malcolm Kelly, WR, Oklahoma

Don't be afraid to pick favorites here, folks - we can take the heat. Your critiques and analyses are, as always, welcome and even cherished. Let's hear it - not just with the second round picks, but with how the draft as a whole is shaking out from each of us as well.

I'll make this promise
I'm not selecting Josh Johnson in the 3rd round.

I liked your first round pick,
but how do you justify grapping a tight end in the second with such a glaring weakness at WR and/or DE?  And Davis? comon.

First I'd have to ask
What's wrong with Davis? As I wrote he is the all time leader in USC history in receiving by a TE. He is arguably the 2nd or 3rd best TE in the draft.

Also I justify passing on WR because I feel that this draft is so deep, getting a terrific pass catching TE in the second (like Davis) and getting two quality WRs in the 3rd and 4th will solve the passing game issues.

WR depth
I personally don't see adding two decent receivers as the sloution to our problem. Yes their is a lot of depth at WR, but that kind of depth is in the Reed and Parrish mold. The only receivers making any kind of impact this year will be Thomas, Sweed, Kelly or Hardy (unless it is a sleeper). I think all the other guys will be decenct receivers in time, but not what we need now. I'm not saying win now or go home, but we need a more refined receiver in the top 2 and MAYBE 3 rounds.

I will say that depending on how the draft goes; if we can land an impact pass catching TE (Davis like you said), it WOULD lessen the need for the BEST WR in the draft. Any WR taken after the 2nd round that makes an impact this year would have to be considered a huge sleeper.

I really like your thought sireric, and if Jordy Nelson was there in the third, with Davis in round 2 and McKelvin, Jenkins, Harvey or DRC in round 1, I would go nuts about our draft.

I can't wait for Saturday!!!

2 WRs
Then how about getting Thomas in the first and Kelly in the second?  Wouldn't that give us immediate depth and immediate impact?  Then get a TE in the 3rd (whomever is left of Dustin Keller, Fred Davis, Bennett, Kellen Davis, Rucker, and Carlson).

As for sleeper WR, my personal favorite is Andre Caldwell.  He could be had in the 3rd round as well if the Bills go TE in the 2nd round.

Kelly in round 2
As most of you have read (if you follow on BB.com or rumblings.com), the scouts do not put too much stock in the combine and pro days. If the Bills select Kelly at any point in the draft, it is because our top notch medical staff has cleared Kelly's health. So, I am assuming that if we select him in round 2, it is because he is healthy. If Kelly is healthy, getting him in round two would be amazing.

I am all up for taking the best player available at #11 and selecting a WR and TE in rounds 2 and 3 (or moving back up).

Kurupt
If we get Harvey/Kelly, thats phenomenal.... However, all 4 scenarios are pretty favorable.  I don't believe Kelly would be there at #41.  And if the Bills don't select a WR at #11, I'm pretty confident they will trade up to get one in late Round 1.

I like Brian and Sieric for having the guts to nab an elite TE.  However, I know Brian would rather have Martellius Bennet.  However, adding an elite pass-catching TE, is crucial to Edwards development.

My only beef is I don't see Malcolm Kelly in a scenario available at #41.

Kelly in the 2nd
Personally, I think it is very possible, though I can see him going in the 20's in round 1 just as easily. I think with his poor 40's, outbursts afterwards and potentially lingering injury questions, his status could be as a 2nd rounder right now. His drop could be considered very similar to Dwayne Jarrett's last year. At this point, who really knows where he'll go. I just think the question marks could push him down some. I would not be opposed to trading back into the late 1st for him, though that would only be an option if we traded down from #11...

New but not so new thought
Okay, so it seems to be a consensus that WR do not make a huge impact in their first year. But my thought is that if you add both a Top 5 WR AND a Top 3 TE, the combination WILL make a big impact. This is the reason our offense can be a lot better without adding FA.

Here we go
Somebody who's in line with my line of thinking! Finally! :)

The NFL teams that are most successful over the long-term have good, efficient offenses. Teams that use defense to win championships are flash-in-the-pan winners, like the Bucs and Ravens. But the Colts, Patriots and Packers - and you can even lump in teams like the Seahawks if you want - have been competitive for so long because they have offenses that can score a competitive amount of points.

Defenses are easier to build than offenses. And the Bills have players who can start on the defensive side of the ball, and they've got some versatility at each position as well. We just don't have that offensively.

In two years under Dick Jauron, we've fielded a defense that has kept us in games and an offense that couldn't win games. This team won't make the playoffs until we can score points consistently. That's why I'm addressing offense early and often in this mock.

Huh, Carlson at #41?
I was much hoping Martellus Bennett would be the pick here.  We need a guy who can block & catch - with Bennett's size, he would be a good red zone threat as well.  A guy who can block well and catch well doesn't need to come off the field for special down-and distance situations, so the defense is left guessing a little more about what is coming on the next play (take that, Belichick!).  A guy with Bennett's size can help move the chains inside the oppenent's red zone, not just between the 20 yard lines.  We need Bennett on this team pretty badly, IMO!  Nothing against Carlson...

Couldn't agree more
As I mentioned in the write-up, Bennett is easily my first choice at TE. But I also mentioned that I have a feeling that he won't be available at #41. That's why I took Carlson.

And
That is why I took Davis. Brian likes Carlson better and I like Davis better, but I don't think either of us would cry if the other was taken.

Re;
Thats the most sense I've heard in a while!

I've been advocating TE for a long time.  I like Fred Davis.  Just my opinion.  Either way, we need weapons.  The more the better.  Thats what I liked the Dwayne Wright pick last year.  I wouldn't be against adding a scat back in rounds 6-7 this year.

TE and WR are huge needs.  I hope we get them both in rounds 1-3.

My rankings so far
1)Jri111
2)Kurupt
3)Brian
4)Sireric

Only one that i couldn't live with is Sireric's draft.  In my opinion WR is our greatest need.  Even if we have to reach slightly for one we can not ignore in the first 2 rounds.  Malcolm Kelly in the 2nd would be great or trading into late 1st and taking him.

by VeroBeachBillsFan on Apr 21, 2008 12:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Boy I've been getting this a lot lately
I was very close to putting down Kelly's name in the second, but I figure he would be gone by then, or the Bills would follow their board a take a dynamic pass catching TE that will help the offense almost as much. TE is a need just like WR so it won't be devalued like QB or RB will.

Got your back
Kelly may represent value in the 2nd round, but I don't want Kelly in round 2 either.  Why?  Beacause in times of trouble is when  a man's true character is revealed.  I don't want a whinner on my team.  I wish you had stayed with Harvey in the 1st though.

by Joe P. on Apr 21, 2008 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Harvey
I've done several mocks with him or some other DE in the first, I wanted to do one as a "what if" scenario, as in "What if Harvey is off the board".

Besides I knew that K would be a pillar of stability and not waver from Harvey in the first.

oh yes
I wavered though. A little too much wavering actually. I don't like to waver, but here I wavered. No more wavering from me until after the draft when I will resume wavering until I can't waver no more.

what?
Yes in times of trouble a man's character is revealed but certainly not in the immediate moments after that trouble hits. Would you call Winston Churchill a whiner if he said "oh man, this sucks!" right after the Germans started bombing London? haha, boy i'm on a tangent. Point is, I disagree that you can judge Kelly's character because of comments made literally minutes after he ran if not seconds.
It's not delivery, It's DiGiorgio!

Interesting scenario played out
Guys

Went to ESPN Darft 2008 and just took the Top 150 and looked at our picks andwho is at the spot we pick and +/- 1 spot.

Rd 1 - Rivers 10, Harvey 11, McKelvin 12
Rd 2 - (Did not use 40 as Pat Sims DT - not a need) Hardy 41, F Davis 42, Cason 43.
Rd 3 - Jerome Simpson WR 71, Geno Hayes LB 72, Johnson S Ark St 73
Rd 4 - Sullivan C 113, Cottam TE 114, Hubbard WR 115
Rd 4 - Moffit LB 131, Dingle DE 132, Stevens TE
Note: I readjusted Rd 5 based on our likely picks in Rds 1-4.
Rd 5 - Brennan QB 146, Steltz S 147, Lowery CB 148

IMHO, using this board, I'd go:
Harvey DE
Cason CB
Simpson WR
Cottam TE
Moffit LB
Steltz S

This exercise points out the likely need for us to trade back up into 2nd to get a WR like Kelly, Hardy or Nelson. If we wait to Rd 3 we are taking a sleeper at WR.

well
This exercise points out the likely need for us to trade back up into 2nd to get a WR like Kelly, Hardy or Nelson. If we wait to Rd 3 we are taking a sleeper at WR.

That's assuming we don't take a WR with one of our first 2 picks, which could spell trouble as it is. IF we are waiting until round 2 for a WR, I would hope we take one with our #41. I don't think it'd be a wise move to pass on WR with our first 2 picks and then trade back into the 2nd. If we're going to trade back into the 2nd, I'd hope it's for a TE or CB after taking a WR earlier.

At this point, I'm not sure a 3rd round WR is going to be able to start right away. The guys we've had pegged there before (Nelson, E.Bennett, etc) have all moved up the boards and are likely 2nd rounders now. I really don't think we can wait until round 3 like some of us thought we could before....me included...

amen to that
kurupt:

Agreed.  If in my exercise we took Hardy at 41 and then looked to use our 3rd and our 4th or our 3rd and JP to get Green Bay's pick at 56, we could still land a targeted CB or TE in the back half of the 2nd round.

My first
2 picks would be Sweed and Flowers.

That would be wonderful.
But I doubt more and more that Flowers will be there at 41.  I love K's draft here, add a TE in the 3rd, and I am set.
Limas would be a Sweed pick at 11. :) So would Harvey.

Way to early to pick a winner
IMO, I give K and sireric a slight advantage.  As much as I don't want Kelly, I couldn't fault our mock drafters, or the Bills (who have actually talked with this kid and his coaches), too much for taking him in the second round.  This mock draft will be won with Day 2 picks.
