For all of us Dick Jauron lovers

Here is a great explanation of his coaching:

Buffalo's Ivy League coach, Dick Jauron, is a fine man but low-voltage personified; he's like a car battery that won't turn the engine on a cold morning. Jauron has just one winning season in seven as a head coach. Losing does not seem to bother him; he's never animated on the sidelines or upset after a loss, and he wasn't upset even after the Bills allowed two scores in the final 20 seconds to lose 25-24 to Dallas before a national audience on "Monday Night Football." Team spirit is high in Buffalo, but the team mindset is all wrong, mirroring the coach. Jauron's gift is lowering expectations; this is his third season in Buffalo, yet he's still talking only about "improvement," not winning. Much of the time, the objective seems to be to lose with dignity. Trailing New England 42-7 in the second half, the Bills kicked a field goal. Trailing New England 56-10 in the fourth quarter, Buffalo punted from midfield. Those were Jauron's decisions and the message sent was, "Oh well, another loss, right you are chaps, pip pip." For a once-proud franchise that has not made the postseason in this decade, the Bills need an attitude adjustment.

Couldn't have said it better myself.  And this is why I'm afraid we will never see the results we should expect from a talented team.  Some of his quotes lately (see the CBS article) continue to leave me baffled about how Jauron feels about this team and what the goal is.

Went to the Browns/Giants game last night....

Never been to any preseason game, anywhere, so I was expecting the most boring football game ever.  However, this thing was actually pretty riveting (for a Browns/Giants game) and there were a ton of big plays, and crazy happenings.  If this was a regular season game, it'd be one of the craziest of the season.

I know this has very little to do with the Bills, but I thought I'd mention a few things....

1. The Browns looked like absolute donkey dung.  Derek Anderson looked like the guy no one had heard of before last season, inaccurate and unsure of himself.  Of course, he was without Braylon Edwards, but man, he was brutal.  His passes were worse than anything we've seen out of JP in year's past.  Skipping passes to WR's, overthrowing FB's in the flat by 4 yards, throwing behind guys, etc.  I hope this keeps up to keep the Browns out of a potential playoff chase.

2. Their D is almost as bad.  That secondary is downright awful right now.  If Youboty were cut from the Bills, he'd have a chance to start for the Browns right away.  Those guys were getting torched by Dominick Hixon, the guy known for the Kevin Everett hit.  He's like 7th on their depth chart.

3. Their ST's was also pretty awful.  Had a punt blocked and allowed a KR for a TD by Hixon.  The Giants had a number of long returns.  On top of that, Josh Cribbs got hurt.

4. The Giants have a backup RB named Danny Ware, who looked excellent.  He's 4th or 5th on the depth chart, so a longshot to make the team.  He looked better than Dwayne Wright ever has and may even be worth looking at if the Giants cut him.

5. The Bills looked far better than the Browns thus far, by a landslide.

6. I wish this was a Bills game, so I could have had something to care about, root for or cheer about.  Instead, I was reduced to rooting for Brady Quinn and David Carr to look like fools, which they succeeded in doing, of course.

Schouman will be out for a while

Per Chris Brown:

SCHOUMAN COULD BE OUT WEEKS: Tight end Derek Schouman's knee injury from Thursday night's game is not season ending, but it could keep him out for "weeks" according to head coach Dick Jauron.

"Derek's going to be a little while, we're hoping not a long while," said Jauron. "At this point Bud (Carpenter) is talking in the weeks. So it's not good, but it could have been worse."

Jauron would only say that Schouman has a knee strain. We'll have mroe on this on the home page tonight.

Sounds like Fine could be our 2nd TE going forward, with Anderson probably assured to make the team.  Unless Schouman's injury isn't that serious and he'll only miss the rest of the preseason, we may have just lost a roster spot elsewhere (6th WR, 6th CB, 9th OL, etc). I also could see Schouman not making the team if the injury is expected to keep him out well into the season.  He has not performed well at all in the preseason and taking upa roster spot as an injured player may not be what the staff needs.  He'd probably be placed on IR then.  It's a longshot that he gets released, but I wouldn't count against it....

Bad news for Lynch and the running game

Peter King thinks he'll finish 2nd in the league in rushing.  The last time he involved a Bill so heavily, he predicted Travis Henry would lead the league in rushing.

• THIS WOULDN'T BE A FANTASY QUESTION, ERIC, WOULD IT? From Eric Batchelor, of Acton, Mass.: "Who's your pick for leading rusher in the NFL this year?''

1. LaDainian Tomlinson, because his Michael Turner-security blanket is gone.

2. Marshawn Lynch.

3. Steven Jackson.

4. Joseph Addai.

5. Adrian Peterson.

Yikes.  I like the attention, but this guy is a freakin' curse.  I hope it's an LT curse (assuming I don't get him in fantasy) and not a curse for Marshawn!!

Tackles are dropping like flies

Matt Murphy and Patrick Estes were injured today.

And it continues.  More and more reason for Brandon or whoever to fly out to Peters and get something done.  Not that Murphy/Estes were going to challenge for a starting job, but the depth at the position is quickly dwindling.  We absolutely HAVE to get Peters into camp ASAP.  I really don't care what it takes at this point.  And I also don't know what it will take for the front office to force the issue.  They seem to think starting Kirk Chambers is an ok possibility at this point...

Also, for Thursday night, we could be looking at a full half and into the 3rd Q for Walker, and probably the whole game for Chambers, with Demetrius Bell as the lone backup.  This is getting ugly, quickly.  A roster move is probably going to need to be made to add another OT for the game Thursday, at the least.  I'm thinking a guy like Matt Baker or Dustin Fox or Jon Corto are staring a pink slip right between the eyes...

Bills at Redskins: Open Game Thread

Buf_medium      Was_medium
Final Score: Redskins 17, Bills 14
Hogs Haven Interview :: What to Watch For

Q4, 0:00: That's all she wrote.  Turnovers and poor run defense on Buffalo's third-teamers' part kept the score consistent throughout much of the second half.  'Skins win the pre-seaso opener by 3.  First impressions coming up tomorrow morning; Film Session early this week (definitely before the Steelers game).  Thanks to everyone who joined us for this game thread!

Q3, 10:59: Dwayne Wright fumbles the ball; Washington's recovery leads to a 45-yard field goal by Shaun Suisham.  Redskins re-take the lead, 17-14.

Q2, 1:11: An Ashton Youboty interception on Todd Collins sets up Buffalo's first touchdown of the pre-season, a touchdown reception for rookie WR James Hardy from J.P. Losman.  Two-point conversion is good (Losman to Justin Jenkins), and we've got ourselves a tied ballgame.

Q2, 3:02: J.P. Losman drives the Bills down the field - utilizing Fred Jackson very nicely out of the backfield as a receiver - but once again, the drive stalls deep and they settle for a short Lindell field goal.  Buffalo's scored on five straight field goals dating back to last season's Philly finale.

Q2, 9:49: Led by Todd Collins, the Redskins' offense continues to shred a Bills defense sporting a lot of key players.  Ladell Betts takes the screen pass to the house; Redskins 14, Bills 3.

Q1, 0:45: Washington has responded with a 53-yard drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by Clinton Portis.  Buffalo's top defensive unit (sans A. Schobel, M. Stroud, T. McGee) was shredded by Jason Campbell and some timely draw plays.  Redskins 7, Bills 3.

Q1, 11:28: Washington fumbles the opening kickoff, and it's recovered by Rian Lindell.  Bills drive stalls in the red zone, but Lindell nails a short field goal to give the Bills an early lead.  (Pass protection for Edwards looks OK; run blocking, not so much.)

Welcome to the official pre-season kickoff of the 2008 Buffalo Bills season!  This is your open game thread for tonight's matchup between the Buffalo Bills and the Washington Redskins.  Tonight, we'll get our first look at a re-tooled Bills roster - sans Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters - in a live setting for the first time.

This is your one-stop shop for discussions during tonight's game.  We'll be breaking down/analyzing events as they happen live, so if you don't yet have one, create an SB Nation account and join us in the comments thread!  (Note: we will create a new thread for overflow comments if/when necessary.)

Bills inactives: WR Josh Reed, OT Jason Peters, DE Copeland Bryan, LB Angelo Crowell, SS Donte Whitner

Somebody finally says it

by it I mean:

The Buffalo Bills have some choices when it comes to resolving the holdout of Pro Bowl left tackle Jason Peters. They can continue to send him text messages, maybe try to track him down on MySpace, or they can get on a plane, have themselves a face-to-face meeting and figure out what it’s going to take to get one of their most influential players back in uniform.

LINK

I've really been thinking about this the past few days.  It sure appears Peters has no intentions of showing up anytime soon, nor does it seem like he cares to speak with the FO at this point.  Well, someone needs to bite the bullet, swallow some pride and make a move.  I agree that it probably needs to be some rather high ranking official in the FO.

I know many of you will say screw Peters, we have to move on without him, let him sit and accrue fines, etc, and that may be all fine and dandy.  However, he is probably one of the two or three most important players on this team, maybe the most important, and you can bet your derriere that we won't be winning many games without him.  I don't care how it looks, the FO really needs to consider going TO Peters to figure something out.

Now if Russ Brandon flies out to E. Tumbleweed, Ark or wherever Jason Peters is from, and the big guy grabs a snorkel and hides in his water bed refusing to speak at that point, then we've got an absolute crisis on our hands.

Some more good points brought up:

As much as this is about money it’s also about respect. Your best offensive lineman ought to be paid accordingly.

This is true.  Nobody should argue otherwise.  Don't give me the 'he hasn't proven it long enough crappola".  Derrick Dockery proved to be a solid G, but a $49M Guard?  No way.  Langston Walker had proven to be an underwhelming, overrated player in Oakland, he still got paid handsomely.  Peters deserves the $$$, so it's time someone gets proactive here.

Yes, he was a project, a raw talent in need of refinement. But the notion that he’s indebted to the Bills for mining his potential is pure folly. If the Bills are so adept at developing offensive linemen then how come their front five abounds with free agents? Can we give Peters some credit for what he’s become?

Exactly.  The Bills didn't make Peters, he made himself.  The Bills were there to give him an opportunity and help him in his progress, but the bottom line is, Peters worked his tail off to get where he is.

The longer this drags on, the harder it will be for our O to be successful early in the year.  That could set us back the entire year and that's the last thing this franchise needs.  We need to pay our stars, continue improving and work to get to that next level.  I don't think we can do that without Peters.  He may be acting selfish, childish, stupid, etc..but we still need him.  The best way to get him here is going after and trying to get something done even if it's on his terms.  Sometimes you have to cave in a little to get where you want/need to be.  This is one of those situations.....
