We have an entire NFL off-season - which will include free agency and the 2011 NFL Draft - for the Buffalo Bills to render Chan Gailey's words about quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick meaningless. If there is a shred of truth to Gailey's words, however - and let's face it, Gailey's never been anything but as honest as he can be with the media - the Bills won't be adding a quarterback with the intent to start in 2011.
In case you haven't heard this yet, Gailey, during Monday's year-end press conference, stated that he was "very committed" to Fitzpatrick as his starting quarterback moving into next season.
"Very committed," Gailey said. "He's done a lot of good things. He can improve. But we've got to stop the turnovers. If we can do that, I think we give ourselves a chance to be a successful offense."
We've been over the team's turnover problems. Fitzpatrick threw 15 interceptions and lost five fumbles in 14 starts this past year. Even with those negative plays, Gailey thinks he can win with Fitzpatrick.
"I think he allowed other guys to flourish and that's what he does," Gailey continued. "He puts the ball where it needs to be for people to make plays. That's the one thing you like about the guy, he gives your team an opportunity to win."
Gailey also stated that he was looking forward to seeing what his offense can become in 2011 - not just with Fitzpatrick at quarterback, but with improved offensive line play, a healthier set of receivers, and more efficient use of C.J. Spiller.
