Mike Mayock of NFL Network did a conference call with media last week in anticipation of the 2011 NFL Combine. We've covered some of what was said there, but in a transcript of the call available at The Fifth Down (New York Times), Mayock discussed the Buffalo Bills specifically. Long story short: he thinks they should take a QB.
"To me it’s pretty simple," said Mayock. "If you believe there is a franchise quarterback at three, and I don’t care if it’s Gabbert, Newton, Locker, whoever, if the Buffalo Bills believe that, that need trumps everything else.
"Ryan Fitzpatrick is okay, but you need a franchise quarterback. If your belief is such, you’ve got to draft them. If not, if you have any doubts whatsoever, you look to the defensive side."
That's an opinion I can get behind. To close out his thoughts, Mayock lists Alabama defensive tackle Marcell Dareus, Texas A&M outside linebacker Von Miller and LSU cornerback Patrick Peterson as defenders that the Bills should be interested in.
