It wasn't even a month ago yet that Buffalo Bills head coach Chan Gailey was telling reporters at the NFL owners meetings that he believed his team could win a championship with Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. Told of that comment in a recent Bills-centric ESPN segment focusing on the 2011 NFL Draft, Trent Dilfer - the poster child for "mediocre championship quarterback" - laughed out loud at the idea.
"If you're going to win a Super Bowl with Ryan Fitzpatrick, you'd better have the Baltimore Ravens defense that I played with," Dilfer exclaimed. "That's the only formula to win a Super Bowl without a dynamic, play-making quarterback."
It was rather refreshing, really, to hear Dilfer utter these words. I hear arguments from Bills fans all the time that Buffalo can pass on a quarterback "because the Ravens won with Trent Dilfer." Folks, not even Trent Dilfer would build a football team that way. There are reasons to pass on a quarterback. That little blip of history isn't one of them.
Naturally, Dilfer believes Auburn QB Cam Newton should be Buffalo's pick if he's available, citing his arm strength and run-game physicality as reasons he'd be a good fit. Check the link above to see the surprising things Mel Kiper had to say about Fitzpatrick.
