When the Buffalo Bills take on the Houston Texans this weekend, they'll likely do so with rookie second-round pick Cordy Glenn re-installed at left tackle - and that may not be the only tackle change of the week.
Glenn, who has been out of the lineup since Week 4 with a high ankle sprain, was a full participant at Bills practice on Thursday, and head coach Chan Gailey sounded optimistic that Glenn will be able to make his fifth pro start of the season at Reliant Stadium. The timing of his return couldn't be better, because there's a situation brewing at right tackle that's worth monitoring, as well.
Erik Pears, who did not play much in pre-season action due to what was then reported as a groin injury, did not practice today. Gailey told reporters that Pears was sent to see a hip specialist; he also indicated that the injury currently bothering Pears was the same injury as the one that hindered his training camp progress, leading to some confusion amongst reporters. While we await clarification that may not come on that front, the important note here is that Pears is not healthy, which may force Chris Hairston - who has made three straight starts in place of Glenn, and who was splitting reps with Pears earlier in the season - into the starting right tackle role this week (and perhaps beyond, given Pears' struggles this season).
Things are more clear-cut for defensive end Mark Anderson, who did not practice on Thursday and has subsequently been ruled out of the game. As has been the case for the last two weeks, Chris Kelsay and Kyle Moore will split reps in Anderson's place, and we're likely to get a sprinkling of Shawne Merriman here and there, as well.
The only other remaining injury of note is the continuing knee issues of cornerback Terrence McGee, who was a limited participant for a second straight day. As long as he isn't fully healthy, he won't be able to fully take over for struggling young cornerbacks such as Aaron Williams and Justin Rogers - and, more importantly, he may reach a point of diminishing returns wherein the team decides to shut him down for the season. For now, you can expect to see McGee in his usual limited role on Sunday.
