BR Community Mock Draft: Cincinnati Bengals Select...

The Buffalo Rumblings Community Mock Draft rolls along, with the No. 17 overall pick coming at you right now...

With the No. 17 overall pick in the BR Community Mock Draft, 'Buffalo Bird' and the Cincinnati Bengals select North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples.

"The Bengals have three primary needs: guard, cornerback and wide receiver, in that order," begins Buffalo Bird. "At guard, the team has only one proven starter; beyond that, there is a legitimate dearth of talent, with the only options currently on the roster consisting of young, unproven players."

Much more from the GM after the jump. The San Diego Chargers and GM 'BillsFanSanDiego619' are now on the clock; remember to send your picks to buffalorumblings@gmail.com.

Here is the rest of Buffalo Bird's Bengals write-up, unedited as it's rather lengthy:

The cornerback position is also precariously stocked, given that only two players with any real experience are signed beyond this season. To make matters worse, one of the two players is Leon Hall, who is coming off a season ending achilles rupture, and there is no guarantee that he’ll be the same lock-down corner he was prior to injury.

Wide receiver is a distant third in my opinion, given the spectacular rookie season of A.J. Green and the presence of Jermaine Gresham at tight end. Another year with Dalton, Green and Gresham playing together in the same system should yield even better results than 2011. The Bengals need a number two wide receiver, but with the depth at that position in this year’s draft, I think they can grab a viable option in round 2 or 3.

This pick was coming down to 3 players, Stephon Gilmore, Janoris Jenkins and Cordy Glenn until…the best 4-3 defensive end in the draft fell all the way to pick number 17. If I’m the GM of the Bengals I’m sprinting to the podium with this pick in hand.

Yes, people have questioned Coples motor and his motivation, but this is a prospect with elite talent at a critical position and you can’t pass that up this far into round 1. Besides, the Bengals have experience getting the most out of players with character concerns both on the field (see Ochocinco and T.O.) and off (see Cedric Benson and Pacman Jones).

The Bengals currently have solid depth and some talent at the position, but the addition of Coples, who has drawn comparisons to Mario Williams and Julius Peppers, makes them a fearsome front 4. As we have all discussed before, this is a pass driven league and the best way to counter the pass is with a relenting pass-rush.

Also, the fact that the Bengals select again in just 4 picks made it even easier to pull the trigger. With Gilmore, Jenkins, Glenn and Kendall Wright all still on the board, there is no doubt that a position of need can be adequately filled with the next pick.
