The Buffalo Rumblings Community Mock Draft rolls along, with the No. 18 overall pick coming at you right now...
With the No. 18 overall pick in the BR Community Mock Draft, 'BillsFanSanDiego619' and the San Diego Chargers select Alabama safety Mark Barron.
"Coming into the draft, I felt the Chargers' most pressing needs were guard, pass rusher, and safety," the San Diego native began. "This off-season, A.J. Smith has spent his time fixing the offense after the departure of Vincent Jackson. He signed Jared Gaither, Robert Meachem, LeRon McClain, Eddie Royal and Roscoe Parrish. On the defensive side, he re-signed Luis Castillo and Antonio Garay to add some depth to the D-line, and also signed Jarret Johnson from the Ravens."
Much more from the GM after the jump. The Chicago Bears and GM 'buzzin' are now on the clock; remember to send your picks to buffalorumblings@gmail.com.
"After a typical up and down season for the Bolts, fans in San Diego wanted Smith's head on a stick, but Spanos felt otherwise and decided to give Mr. No Rings another shot," the GM continues. "A.J. can't screw around in this draft and reach for players like he has in the past, i.e Larry English and Buster Davis. He needs to focus on defense to help newly hired defensive coordinator Chuck Pagano, succeed. With David DeCastro already gone I had to go defense; he was the only offensive player I would have selected in the first round. My final decision was between the boys from Alabama, Courtney Upshaw and Barron. After much deliberation, I went with Barron.
"My reasons for picking Barron are the following," the GM concludes. "The Chargers' defense needs as much help as it can get. They need someone who can come in and start from day one. As good as Upshaw may be, I don't feel like he would be a starter right away for the Chargers, and would only add depth to the linebacking corps. This isn't a bad thing by any means, just something I can't see happening with A.J.'s job on the line. Last year the Chargers had a lot of issues in the secondary. With Quentin Jammer getting older and Antoine Cason not performing like he should be, they need help, badly. Eric Weddle had a break-out year last year, and with a good partner in crime playing beside him, I believe he will only get better. The Chargers have had problems at strong safety ever since Rodney Harrison left and went to New England; that's a long time ago, folks. The Chargers have gone through players like Clinton Hart, Terrance Kiel, Steve Gregory, Paul Oliver and last year's injury-prone Bob Sanders. Nothing has worked. Barron has all the tools to succeed in the NFL. He is big, fast, and has great instincts. He played all four years at Alabama and is the most NFL-ready safety in this year's draft. He is excellent in run support and is an excellent tackler. The one red flag on Barron are his injuries. As Bills fans are much aware of Mario Williams' injuries, Barron has had the same two injuries: a hernia and torn pectoral muscle. I believe he and Weddle can become a great pair in the secondary, and can surely help right the ship for the Chargers heading into the future."
