The Buffalo Bills will be keeping backup quarterback Tyler Thigpen on the active roster for the foreseeable future, and it appears that they've sacrificed a wide receiver to do so.

Per Tim Graham of The Buffalo News, the Bills will head into the regular season opener with just five receivers on the active roster. Those five wideouts: Stevie Johnson, Donald Jones, David Nelson, T.J. Graham and Brad Smith. Yes, that's the same Brad Smith that was going to be the third quarterback before things at the backup quarterback position exploded.

That means that the team will release five receivers in total today: Derek Hagan, Ruvell Martin, Marcus Easley, Naaman Roosevelt and Kamar Aiken.

Easley and Aiken are eligible for the practice squad, so it's conceivable that one - if not both - will be kept there until such a time where the Bills can comfortably rely on Tarvaris Jackson as the backup quarterback. Until then, Thigpen will be the primary backup at quarterback, Jackson could very well end up on the inactive list early, and the Bills will be even thinner than usual at receiver.
