Today is locker clean-out day for the Buffalo Bills now that their 2013 season has concluded. For the following upcoming unrestricted free agents, this may be the last day several key Bills players are spotted at One Bills Drive as a member of this organization.
FB Frank Summers: A bit player on offense, Summers played roughly one every five snaps this season, logging 12 carries for 46 yards and a touchdown as well as seven receptions for 79 yards and another score.
TE Scott Chandler: Believe it not, Chandler was Buffalo's leading receiver this season, with 53 receptions for 655 yards and two scores. The Bills, however, have been looking at tight ends for the better part of the year, signing Tony Moeaki earlier this month and pursuing several other prominent names last spring.
OT Thomas Welch: Served as the top reserve tackle all season, but only participated in a handful of snaps for goal line work as Cordy Glenn and Erik Pears played every snap at left and right tackle, respectively.
DL Alex Carrington: He began the season as a starter, but a quad tear in Week 3 ended his season, and the Bills just gave a three-year deal with a $3.1 million signing bonus to Alan Branch. Carrington still sounds open to returning, however.
LB Arthur Moats: Spent most of the season as the base-defense inside linebacker next to Kiko Alonso, playing on about one-third of all downs. He's also a core specialist. Late in the season, however, he lost his defensive snaps to Nigel Bradham, so if he's back, it's likely as a reserve.
S Jairus Byrd: By now, you're well aware of the acrimonious, year-long saga between the Bills and Byrd. Despite missing the better part of six games, Byrd still tied for the team lead with four interceptions and made his third Pro Bowl. Buffalo still has the option to franchise Byrd; it will cost them $8.3 million this year (as opposed to $6.9 million last year) if they choose that path.
S Jim Leonhard: Signed just prior to the start of the regular season to account for Byrd's plantar fasciitis, Leonhard wound up being a valuable fill-in player for the Bills, finishing the season with 41 tackles and four interceptions. The 31-year-old's fate may end up being tied to Byrd's.
K Dan Carpenter: It would be shocking if the Bills let Carpenter walk following an outstanding season in which he connected on 33-of-36 field goal tries (including 4-of-6 from beyond 50 yards), tying Steve Christie's franchise mark for most field goals made in a season.
P Brian Moorman: The Bills brought Moorman back for a career epilogue following the early-season punting disaster that was Shawn Powell. Moorman is a shell of his former All-Pro self, but had a few nice moments in what most believe will be his final season in Buffalo.
