Buffalo Bills News, 2/1: How Well Have They Drafted?

Links today include a former Buffalo Bills great talking about the new Harvard-NFLPA partnership and the last five drafts, plus catching up with Mike Lodish, Kirk Morrison, Don Beebe and Jim Kelly.

Inside The Bills | A league ranking of last 5 drafts

" has put together a comprehensive look at the success rate of each NFL club with their draft choices over the past five years (2008-2012) and subsequently ranked them."

I'm not a big fan of this rating. It doesn't talk about how good any of the players are, it just worries about whether they started and gives a short look at Pro Bowl numbers. Just because the Bills had no better options doesn't make the guys they drafted any good. Looking at the top few teams on the list, none of the top six made the playoffs, while the Ravens and 49ers are in the bottom 11.

Former Pro On Harvard NFL Health Study: "Long Time Coming" | WBUR

"The ear hole in the helmet is right here, so you’d slam him in the head, right in the ear hole, and that would knock him out," Byrd recalled. "And that was accepted play. That was the way the game was played."

Butch Byrd was a physical defensive back for the Buffalo Bills who is very happy to see the NFLPA and Harvard partner on this study. It's the first step in helping these players maintain some sort of worthwhile life after they leave the game. In addition to the mental problems associated with multiple concussions, Byrd discusses the other players he played with who can barely walk. The institute will try to help them, too, with a much broader scope than head injuries. It's a step in the right direction.

One writer thinks the Bills should let Andy Levitre walk and draft Alabama guard Chance Warmack at No. 8. Yeah - because creating a hole to fill it on draft day is the right way to build a franchise.
