Buffalo Bills training camp 2013: Day 2 practice recap

EJ Manuel saw first-team work for the Buffalo Bills on Monday, and head coach Doug Marrone discussed how the team is easing him into his first training camp.

EJ Manuel was the first Buffalo Bills quarterback to take reps in 11-on-11 team work during the team's second training camp practice, and did enough to generate a little more buzz before the calendar hits August.

Kevin Kolb still took more reps than Manuel - WKBW's Jeff Russo pointed out that Manuel took the first six reps of team work, with Kolb taking the next ten, for example - but the rookie acquitted himself well while Kolb struggled, according to essentially every reporter on hand. A sampling of tweets on the matter:

By the admission of head coach Doug Marrone (via John Kryk of The Toronto Sun), however, Manuel is not seeing the same complexity in defensive looks as Kolb has thus far.

"EJ’s in a pretty decent position," said Marrone. "We throw Kevin out there and Kevin's seeing everything, sometimes for the first time, and EJ is able to sit back, look at it and talk in the classroom about it and learn from it. Now we have to start stepping it up and put (EJ) in those situations, too."

Buffalo is clearly easing their first-round pick into the action, but good signs are nothing to complain about this early on for Manuel.

Mario missing

Mario Williams was not in attendance for today's practice, and Marrone didn't have much to report on the matter after practice. Williams did not participate in the team portions of Sunday night's practice, and Marrone essentially gave the same post-practice update as he did last night.

"He's going to be evaluated by our doctors, so he's off campus being evaluated and I have not heard anything or any report back," Marrone told reporters.

It's not yet clear when Williams will be back on the practice field, but reporters on hand for the opening practice of training camp indicated that the injury did not appear to be serious.

Other depth chart notes

While the quarterbacks continue to rotate, one position that hasn't yet seen much in the way of rep sharing appears to be left guard. As Chris Brown of BuffaloBills.com noted, Colin Brown took first-team reps there for the second straight day ahead of Doug Legursky. As we discussed this morning, there are already signs that Brown could quickly take a commanding lead in that race.

Meanwhile, WGR 550's Howard Simon wrote that late in team work, Ron Brooks saw some first-team action as a cornerback. Last night, Justin Rogers took those first-team reps. Leodis McKelvin is healthy and a full practice participant, but we haven't seen anything indicating that he's taken reps with the ones through two camp practices. That position is one to keep an eye on moving forward.

We'll have more as we see it.
