Buffalo Bills trade linebacker Chris White to Detroit Lions

A third-year player out of Mississippi State, White was the Bills' most frequently-used player on special teams in 2012, and had continued that trend into the 2013 preseason.

The Buffalo Bills, in need of numbers at the quarterback position, traded linebacker Chris White to the Detroit Lions on Sunday evening in exchange for veteran signal caller Thaddeus Lewis. White tweeted the news of his departure himself, though it did not become clear that he'd been traded until later in the evening:

White had had a good training camp working as the third-team middle linebacker in Mike Pettine's defense, and also paced the team in special teams reps through three preseason games (not to mention during the 2012 season). Evidently, the team has different plans in both areas.

Including today's acquisitions of quarterback Matt Leinart and Thaddeus Lewis, Buffalo's roster sits at 81 players (with player No. 82, tackle Chris Hairston, still on Active/PUP). They'll need to release six more by that Tuesday afternoon deadline.
