Buffalo Bills news, 8/30: roster cuts loom following 35-13 loss to Lions

With the roster cuts looming tomorrow, prognosticators are taking their best shot at predicting the 53-man roster. Read all the game recaps from Thursday's atrocity, too.

Final score: Lions 35, Bills 13

Turnovers costly in loss to Lions -
"The one thing that is disappointing is what has been hurting us for a long period of time is the turnover ratio," said Marrone. "When you give up three turnovers close in the red zone on your side of the 50 then really you’re giving them 21 points. Then you have a personal foul which leads to another touchdown, it’s very difficult to overcome those things and win games. I told the team we are not going to be that football team."

Injury bug keeps biting Bills -
When asked if he was concerned about his team’s depth Marrone had a short reply. "I am," he said.

LB Dowtin leaves impression in preseason finale -
"Dowtin was one of the top contributors on defense, registering an interception, two tackles, an assist and a deflected pass. He picked off Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, grabbing the ball out of the air after wide receiver Nate Burleson tipped the pass that was intended for him."

Bills Focus: Bills Quarterback Questions Remain -
"The questions around the Bills quarterback position still remain after the preseason, but Thad Lewis may have shown that he deserves to stick around."

Bills Roundup: Turnovers Lead to 35-13 Loss -
"With two new quarterbacks under center for Buffalo, the team turned the ball over three times and dug themselves an early hole that they could not bounce back from, in a 35-13 loss to Detroit."

Doug Marrone Postgame Press Conference -
"The Bills head coach talks about the injuries, the quarterback play, and the penalties in the 35-13 loss to the Lions."

Leinart laments performance -
"I haven’t played in a while, the speed of the game and all that stuff, but just being a professional, being a football player," he said. "Coming in here I expect more out of myself, I have expectations for myself. Whether I was here for three days or three years, you cant do that. There’s not a lot to be said. It is what it is, you just move on and see what happens. I’m just grateful to have a fun week here. And who knows, who knows what will happen."

Looking for more from CBs -
"I think we’ve got to do a better job in press," said Marrone. "Again we’ve got to be up there and contend more of those passes that they’re doing. We’ve got to put them in a position they can get the job done. We do have a lot of tape with them out there. We’ll be able to look at that. Obviously we wanted to look at both of those players to make a decision on where both of them were at. We rested Justin Rogers. We wanted to make sure we knew where those other two players were."

Points after: Lions 35, Bills 13 - The Buffalo News
"What it means: On one hand, nothing. It's the preseason. But getting outscored 65-13 over a seven-quarter span could mean a little something. The Bills are trying to change a culture of losing, and with several depth players in the spotlight and fighting for jobs, few showed any life."

Bills throw backups to the Lions in preseason finale - The Buffalo News
"If the Bills wanted to try to create overconfidence in New England, Thursday’s game at Ralph Wilson Stadium was a noble effort in that direction. Detroit jumped to a 21-0 lead and held a 35-3 halftime advantage."

New quarterbacks limit chances for receivers to catch on - The Buffalo News
Marrone further suggested Thursday night’s fiasco likely won’t matter when making the final receiver cuts when he said, "I feel good about that position. If we put the right guy out there, I think those guys can make things happen."

HAMILTON: The Bills Finally Finish The Preseason - WGR 550
"We already know Justin Rogers and Ron Brooks are below average corners. In a perfect world they’d be cut too, but the Bills have no choice other than to keep them and play them. One other corner in the mix is Nickell Robey."

Sideline Reactions: Lions 35, Bills 13 - WGR 550
"Jobs were on the line and perhaps jobs were claimed when it all came to a conclusion just past 10 pm in Orchard Park. Unlike the other reaction pieces throughout the regular season that are reserved for more of an overall look at the game that was, this time around we'll take a look at who helped themselves and the players that hurt their chances."

"With apologies to 13WHAM and its advertisers, do yourself a favor and don’t spend one second watching the televised replay of this nightmarish performance. It will only serve to spoil what would otherwise be a beautiful late summer evening."

Roster breakdowns and more

Bills who are practice squad eligible -
"Obviously, most of Buffalo’s draft choices will be on the 53-man roster and won’t be considerations for the eight-man practice squad, but among the more interesting names on this list include Marcus Easley, Chris Hogan, Thad Lewis and Zebrie Sanders."
