Mario Williams: AFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 2

Mario Williams sacked Cam Newton 4.5 times in Sunday's Bills win, and it earned him AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors from the NFL.

Buffalo Bills pass rusher Mario Williams has very deservedly been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the Bills' 24-23 win over the Carolina Panthers this past Sunday.

Williams spearheaded a six-sack effort by Buffalo's defense, setting a Bills franchise record and a personal best with 4.5 sacks of quarterback Cam Newton on the day. He was virtually unblockable for the entire contest, giving Panthers right tackle Byron Bell fits and helping the Bills force Newton into several errant throws throughout the game.

In 18 career games with the Bills, Williams now has 15 sacks. Exactly half of that total were accrued in two games: the 4.5 he collected against Carolina, and three more on Andrew Luck in a Week 12 road loss to the Indianapolis Colts last season.

Williams will look to keep the momentum from his Week 2 performance going in Week 3 against the New York Jets, where he'll spend a lot of time matched up against Austin Howard - a player that got under Williams' skin in his Bills debut a little over a year ago.
