Two key Buffalo Bills players earned raises based on their play in 2013.

Rookie contracts are given to unproven NFL players, but if that young player reaches certain benchmarks built into their contracts, those contracts escalate. Two first-round picks from the 2010 NFL Draft earned these escalators based on their play in 2013: C.J. Spiller and Jerry Hughes.

Per Brian McInyre, Spiller's base salary will increase to $3.499 million in 2014. He was scheduled to make $1.749 million. With the new salary, his cap hit will increase to just under $6 million, including the prorated portion of his signing bonus.

Hughes, drafted in the same first round by the Indianapolis Colts and acquired via trade last May, earned a jump in salary much larger than Spiller's. Scheduled to make $1.095 million in base salary in 2014, Hughes will now draw $3.995 million in salary - a $2.9 million jump - thanks to his 10 sacks, again per McIntyre. That nearly $4 million figure is roughly the same as Hughes' earnings from the first four years of his career combined.
