2015 NFL Combine weigh-ins: quarterback, running back, receiver prospects

With the second day of the Combine came the arrival of quarterbacks, running backs, and wide receivers. Who are you interested in watching this weekend?

Day two of the 2015 NFL Combine is in the books, and the televised workouts will begin tomorrow. The big attraction today was the arrival of the offensive skill position players for measuring and interviewing. Below, we have a table of all of the measurements from today's weigh-ins recorded from this spreadsheet, courtesy of Mike Loyko of NEPatriotsDraft.com. Wondering what these numbers mean? Here's a primer:

  • NFL teams use a four digit measurement notation system for heights. The leftmost digit represents feet, the middle two digits represent inches, and the rightmost digit represents eighths of an inch. Thus, a height of 6035 would be read as "six feet, three and five-eighths inches."
  • Hand sizes range from eight inches to over 11 inches. In general, you want to see prospects have larger hands, which allow them to grip the ball better for catching, carrying or throwing, or gives them a more powerful tackling form. A good rule of thumb is that a player should have at least nine-inch hands, especially if he plays quarterback or receiver.
  • Arm lengths tend to range from 27-37 inches. You like seeing longer arms, especially on linemen, as it allows them to engage opponents outside of their pads and hold players at bay. Longer arms are also useful to give a guy a larger tackle or catch radius. Anything over 34 inches is considered a great arm length.
  • Ideal heights can vary widely across positions. Quarterbacks are usually preferred to measure at least 6'1". Offensive tackles should be at least 6'5". Tight ends are usually at least 6'3". For weights, there is a similar variance across positions, with offensive linemen usually weighing at least 290 pounds, defensive ends weighing 240 to 280 pounds, cornerbacks weighing 180 to 210 pounds, et cetera.
