Rumblings Bills grades: Week 6

See how each Bills player performed against the 49ers on Sunday.

Below are grades for every Buffalo Bills player on every play in the team’s Week 6 win over the San Francisco 49ers. Cumulative grades and snap counts will be added soon.

(For a quick primer on this project, this is from the introduction article. Here's a link to the entire thing.)

As I re-watch each game, I’ll be assigning number grades to each Bills player on every play this year, so keep in mind... the grades themselves will be inherently subjective. However, they should provide a relatively good idea of which players are struggling and excelling on the field. This system is not precisely how Pro Football Focus grades — they have multiple graders for each game and use a different numbering system — but it’s similar. Below you’ll find that grades were assigned in 0.2-point intervals on a scale from -1.0 to +1.0 on each play for each player.

Offense vs. 49ers

Player Overall Run-Block Pass-Block Pass Run Receiving Penalty
Tyrod Taylor 4 1.6 1.8 0.6
LeSean McCoy 2.6 0.8 1.8 0
Richie Incognito 2.4 1.6 1 -0.2
Eric Wood 0.8 0.2 0.2 0.4
John Miller 2.8 1.8 1
Jordan Mills 2.4 0.6 1.8
Cordy Glenn 4.4 1.6 2.6 0.2
Ryan Groy 0.8 0.4 0.4
Robert Woods 1.2 1.2 0.2 -0.2
Marquise Goodwin -0.2 0.2 -0.4
Charles Clay 0.8 0.8 0.2 -0.2
Jerome Felton 0.6 0.8 -0.2
Nick O'Leary 1 1 -0.2 0.4 -0.2
Walt Powell 0.4 0.4
Mike Gillislee 0.6 0.2 0.4
Justin Hunter 0.2 0.2
Reggie Bush 0.2 0 0.2
EJ Manuel -0.2 -0.4 0.2
Michael Ola -0.2 -0.2
Jonathan Williams 0 0

Observations:

Quite clearly, this was Tyrod Taylor’s best game thus far in the 2016 regular season. He made accurate throws everywhere on the field and only had a pair of throws he'd probably want back. His touchdown to Justin Hunter was a gorgeous pass, and Buffalo's quarterback was again remarkable at eluding pressure to make plays with his legs or as as a thrower outside the pocket. LeSean McCoy was great but has actually had higher-graded individual performances this year, most namely in Week 5 against the Rams -- the blocking was that good against the 49ers. Cordy Glenn was a brick wall in pass protection, and Richie Incognito had his finest outing of the 2016 campaign to date. John Miller wasn't a liability by any stretch of the imagination, yet he struggled more than I've come to expect. Most of that had to do with the immense length of both Arik Armstead and DeForest Buckner. Charles Clay and Nick O'Leary excelled as blockers. So did Robert Woods.

Defense vs 49ers

Corbin Bryant 0.4 0 0.2 0.2
Adolphus Washington 0.6 0.6
Preston Brown 0.8 0.6 0.4 -0.2
Zach Brown 1.4 1.2 0 0.2
Brandon Spikes 0 0 0
Lerentee McCray 0.2 0.8 -0.6
Lorenzo Alexander -0.2 -0.4 0.2
Stephon Gilmore 0.4 0 0.4
Nickell Robey-Coleman 0.6 -0.2 0.8
Kevon Seymour 0
Aaron Williams 0 0.2 -0.2

Robert Blanton 0
Ronald Darby 0.6 0.4 0.2
Jonathan Meeks 0
Duke Williams 0.2 0.2
Ramon Humber 0.2 0.2 0

Observations:

Kyle Williams looked like the Kyle Williams of about two or three years ago against San Francisco. Leading up to this game with the 49ers, the veteran defensive lineman had been a run-game destroyer but wasn't productive as a pass-rusher. Against Chip Kelly's squad, Williams was consistently disruptive in every aspect. Lerentee McCray's struggles getting to the quarterback continued, but for the second-straight week he displayed strong hand use which helped him make plays against the run. Zach Brown was Zach Brown. Nickell Robey-Coleman was Nickell Robey-Coleman. Lorenzo Alexander had trouble setting the edge early in the game, which hurt his run-stopping grade yet he got a nice pass-rushing boost for his tightly bent strip sack of Colin Kaepernick in the second half after not doing much to begin the game. Jerry Hughes didn't have the easiest day against former All-Pro Joe Staley, yet the Bills No. 1 edge-rusher has a nice blend of natural talent, refined skills, and a non-stop motor. As usual, he had positive grades as a pass-rusher and run-defender. Lastly, Bills coaches correctly picked Leger Douzable as the guy to get the majority of the playing time as the DT No. 2 on the interior. His +1.2 overall grade was his best thus far this season.
