Aaron Williams injury: Buffalo Bills safety leaves game after dirty hit

The Bills safety’s status is unclear moving forward.

Buffalo Bills safety Aaron Williams has left the team’s Week 7 game against the Miami Dolphins after a vicious, blindside hit from Jarvis Landry. He was able to walk off under his own power with assistance but he never appeared to lose consciousness. Here is a replay.

Williams missed the last 13 games of the 2015 season after hurting his neck on a scary hit against the New England Patriots while tackling Julian Edelman. He had surgery and his status for 2016 was unknown heading into training camp. Seeing him down on the ground again with a similar problem was difficult.

Landry was assessed a 15-yard penalty but was not ejected as this unnecessary roughness penalty does not count toward the automatic ejection rule. Miami eventually settled for a field goal. The wide receiver walked over to Williams as he was exiting the field to share some words or apology or encouragement.

Williams is out for the game, but we don’t know anything about the long-term ramifications yet.
