Release of CB Roberson among Bills’ Wednesday roster moves

The release of the CB after less than a week opens a coveted spot on the 53-man roster.

Cornerback Marcus Roberson has been released by the Bills, four days after the team signed him off the practice squad. Also, the team released kicker Marshall Morgan from the practice squad, replacing him with long snapper Reid Ferguson.

Roberson, who had been with the team since signing on to the practice squad before the start of the regular season, only saw action on two special teams snaps in the loss to the Patriots on Sunday.

Morgan, who had spent time with the team during the offseason in a competition with incumbent kicker Dan Carpenter, was signed after the victory over the Los Angeles Rams as possible insurance for punter Colton Schmidt, who made an appearance on the injury report that week. Schmidt was fine, and Morgan was never elevated to the 53-man roster.

The addition of Ferguson to the squad is odd. He was a UDFA pickup by the Bills, and is probably best remembered as the guy who prompted this reaction when his head coach couldn’t remember who he was:

The Bills still have Garrison Sanborn on the roster, one of the better long snappers in the NFL (you can tell he’s good because you never hear his name during a game). mIt’s possible he may be injured, or maybe the Bills wanted another big body to use as a lineman during practice.

The imost intriguing thing to come out of this flurry of moves is that the Bills have an open spot on the 53-man roster. there are any number of positions they could address with that spot (safety and wide receiver are two big ones that come to mind), and after yesterday’s out-of-nowhere signing of Percy Harvin, who knows what the next move holds?
