Following news that Rex Ryan was out as head coach, the Buffalo Bills have announced general manager Doug Whaley will lead the search for his replacement. Many had speculated Whaley would be on the outs in addition to Rex but that’s not the case.
Whaley was part of the team that hired Ryan two years ago, along with owners Terry and Kim Pegula and team president Russ Brandon. It’s unclear which, if any, of those names will join Whaley this time around. Interim coach Anthony Lynn is the odd-on favorite to be named permanent head coach. Any names beyond that are purely speculation at this point.
With Rex being fired, many see it as a confirmation of the playoff ultimatum that team ownership sent down last offseason. If that’s the case, Whaley should be on the outs, as well, instead of hiring his second head coach as general manager and third as a member of the team’s front office.
