The Carolina Panthers finally cracked the Denver Broncos' defense for a few big plays in the third quarter of Super Bowl 50, but ultimately have nothing to show for it.
Graham Gano bounced a field goal off of the right upright to keep the store static after the Panthers' first possession of the third quarter, and Cam Newton bounced a pass off of Ted Ginn's hands into the waiting arms of T.J. Ward to stall another good-looking drive later on in the quarter.
Denver, meanwhile, tacked on a third Brandon McManus field goal between those two Panthers possessions to extend their Super Bowl lead to 16-7, a lead that they still hold entering the fourth quarter.
Newton and the Panthers continue to be bothered by a ferocious Broncos pass rush, with potential Super Bowl MVP Von Miller leading the charge on that front. On the other side of the field, however, Peyton Manning and the Broncos' offense continue to struggle to generate points, giving the Panthers a fighting chance despite their two-score deficit.
