Sammy Watkins injury: broken foot healed as training camp begins

His foot is healed, but they aren’t pushing it.

Matt Warren is Associate Director of NFL coverage for SB Nation and previously covered the Bills for Buffalo Rumblings for more than a decade.

The Buffalo Bills are taking it slow as they return wide receiver Sammy Watkins to the field following offseason foot surgery. They want to make sure the problem doesn’t linger. As the Bills start training camp, Watkins is healthy enough to do some limited conditioning work.

"Watkins played some pickup basketball at LA Fitness but didn't do much jumping or crashing the boards," reports Matthew Fairburn of "Afterward, he said his foot feels great. His X-rays this week came back clean, and the broken foot he had surgery on this spring has healed."

He’s been running in a straight line but is still not doing stressful activities that might aggravate the injury. He doesn’t expect to do much during training camp as they are taking a very careful approach.

"With this injury it's more mental than physical," Watkins said. "There's going to be good days and bad days, but I feel great."

Watkins has passed his Bills conditioning test, which mainly involves running in a straight line.
