Buffalo Bills announce five assistant coach hirings

Sean McDermott, slowly but surely, continues to make additions to the Bills 2017 coaching staff.

Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott’s 2017 staff is continuing to take shape. Thursday the team announced a key hire, naming Phil McGeoghan as the team’s wide receivers coach, while also announcing the hiring of John Egorugwu, Marc Lubick, Matt Smiley and Bill Teerlinck.

McGeoghan (pronounced muh-GAY-gehn), takes over the reins from former Bills wide receiver coach Sanjay Lal. McGeoghan, 37, comes to Buffalo after spending the last two seasons in the college ranks, coaching the same position at East Carolina University. During his time there, he oversaw the development of star receiver Isaiah ‘Zay’ Jones, who broke the all-time NCAA record for catches (399), and also set the single-season receptions mark in 2016 by catching 158 passes. Prior to ECU, McGeoghan worked in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins from 2012–2014 as assistant wide receivers coach and coached at South Florida from 2009-2011.

Egorugwu, 31, will serve as the team’s defensive quality control coach after spending the past two seasons as a defensive staff assistant with the Baltimore Ravens. He has coached on both sides of the ball at the college level.

Lubick joins the Bills as the offensive quality control/assistant quarterbacks coach. He has nine seasons of NFL experience under his belt, and most recently served as the assistant wide receivers coach of the Denver Broncos (2015-16). The 39-year-old also spent four seasons (2010-14) as an offensive assistant with the Houston Texans, along with serving in various roles at Colorado State University, and was a scout for the then-St. Louis Rams from 2003 to ‘04.

Smiley was named the assistant special teams coach. The 38-year-old is entering his fifth season coaching in the NFL, prior to Buffalo he served in the same role with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Teerlinck will be the Bills assistant defensive line coach after spending the last four seasons coaching the defensive line and serving as the co-defensive coordinator at the University of Nevada. The 38-year-old also served as a defensive assistant with the Indianapolis Colts from 2007-11.
