Bills training camp, 8/14: scuffle during red zone work, injury updates

The Buffalo Bills had their second-to-last public training camp practice on Monday, and it was highlighted by several spats throughout the session. Before practice got started, the team revealed that newly-acquired wide receiver Jordan Matthews has a chip fracture in his sternum, and would not participate in Monday’s practice. The Bills say Matthews availability is currently “week to week” due to the injury.

Sloppy practice

Head coach Sean McDermott had to stop practice twice for mistakes. At one point after two dropped passes by the first-team offense, the second-team defense was missing a cornerback. He called over the whole team and had them take a knee yelling, “practice like winners” in addition to some choice swear words. The offense picked it up after that and the intensity went up across the board which led to some skirmishes later.

Scuffles

Fights during training camp on normal. But with that said, the Bills had their fair share of scuffles on Monday. Even quarterback Tyrod Taylor was in the mix, getting into an altercation with defensive lineman Jerry Hughes. Richie Incognito was the voice of reason for this fight, breaking up Taylor and Hughes. The edge rusher was kicked out practice by defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier, who Hughes was seen jawing at as he left the field.

Shaq Lawson threw a punch a few minutes before that scuffle, and was kicked out of practice, too.

Veterans Richie Incognito, Eric Wood, and Lorenzo Alexander each deflected the seriousness of the spats that took place, expressing that all would be forgotten once the team got back to the locker room.

Injuries

Outside of Matthews, the Bills were relatively healthier today. Cornerback Kevon Seymour made his way back into the starting lineup and while he was considered limited, he took every snap with the first team today.

Cordy Glenn’s maintenance day is scarier than Charles Clay’s, especially because Clay worked on the side with trainers while Glenn was nowhere to be seen.

Odds and ends

Nathan Peterman again worked with the second team on Monday and looked good in the process... Buffalo worked a lot on screen passes and swing passes today, in multiple formations and to multiple positions... Zay Jones seemed to be exclusively working at the outside position with Anquan Boldin in the slot...
