The Buffalo Bills announced Sunday that the team has released punter Austin Rehkow and designated tight end Jason Croom as waived/injured. Croom suffered an ankle injury in Thursday’s preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He is likely to end up on injured reserve after clearing waivers.
The release of Rehkow assures that Colton Schmidt will be the Bills punter in 2017. Rehkow was brought in to compete with Schmidt for the job after Schmidt had a terrible 2016 campaign. Although it was not much of a competition, Schmidt took nearly all the reps during the preseason games. The release of Rhekow was a foregone conclusion to most Bills fans by this point.
To fill out the roster after these moves the Bills signed tight end Rory Anderson and safety Adrian McDonald. Anderson was a seventh- round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2015 but suffered an ankle injury and didn’t play in any games. He spent last season on the practice squad of the Chicago Bears. McDonald singed as an undrafted free agent with the Los Angeles Chargers in 2016, but was waived before the season started.
