Tyrod Taylor rushed for 38 yards against the New York Jets on Sunday. It was only the 20th-most prolific day rushing the ball in his career but in the process, he passed Joe Ferguson for the most rushing yards in Buffalo Bills team history by a quarterback.
Tyrod now has 1186 yards on the ground in 30 games, an average of 39.5 rushing yards per game. Several of Tyrod’s runs on Sunday resulted in first downs, including one on the final drive to seal the game on third down.
The man he supplanted was Joe Ferguson, who used 164 games to accumulate 1174 yards on the ground. That’s just 7.2 yards per game if you’re trying to compare the two. Ferguson spent more than a decade as the Bills’ starter in the 70s and early 80s with the team going 77-86 in his tenure.
Behind Taylor and Ferguson, Jim Kelly (1049), Doug Flutie (885), Ryan Fitzpatrick (822), Jack Kemp (780), and Rob Johnson (732) all had more than 500 rushing yards in their career. Taylor is far and away the leader in per-game rushing by quarterbacks with Johnson lagging behind at 24.4 yards per game. Taylor also holds the record for longest run by a quarterback on the Bills, a 49-yard scamper that eclipsed a 45-yard run by Ed Rutkowski during the days of the American Football League.
Taylor is now the 21st-leading rusher in Bills team history but could move into 17th place by the end of the season if he stays healthy.
