With Shrine game practices already underway and the Senior Bowl up next, it was time for SB Nation’s draft guru Dan Kadar to publish his latest mock draft.
This attempt, Kadar shakes things up by added the proviso that several teams, like the New York Jets, Arizona Cardinals, and Washington Redskins all decide to splurge on quarterbacks in free agency. This relieves the pressure to draft a quarterback in the first round for some of them, allowing a certain Wyoming quarterback to fall into the Buffalo Bills laps.
Kadar also likes to mock defensive tackles to the Bills and this time the team manages to land one of the best in the class.
21. Buffalo Bills: Josh Allen, QB, Wyoming
All of the quarterback changes that happen this offseason could lead to a draft-day fall for Allen. If he’s around when the Bills come up, they should gamble a pick on his immense upside.
22. Buffalo Bills (via Kansas City Chiefs): Da’Ron Payne, DT, Alabama
Even if Kyle Williams is back for another season with the Bills, the run defense needs improving. Playing the run is Payne’s specialty. At Alabama he often played over the nose. He helped neutralize Georgia running back Nick Chubb in the national championship game.
Grif’s take:
Allen is probably the most polarizing prospect in the draft this year. His good tape is Carson Wentz worthy, his bad tape is more JP Losman. You see flashes of his massive talent, but it’s always just flashes. Allen needs to go to a team that offers strong teaching and leadership that will develop his strengths and mitigate his weaknesses. I don’t think the Bills are that team, so I won’t be an advocate for this selection. Da’Ron Payne, on the other hand, would be a slam dunk selection for the Bills, as he’s one of the few complete defensive tackles in the class. He was a monster against the run and the pass as recently as the National Championship game.
