Tooting My Own Horn (about Matt Barkley)

It's only been one game with Barkley, but it sure felt good to have competent QB play today.

I know I'm a loser for dong this, but here's an excerpt from my 2015 BROP.

"Philadelphia is the key. Does Chip Kelly covet Marcus Mariota enough to give up a King's Ransom? If so, he will be out a boatload of picks. Seeing that his passing defense ranked #30 in yards allowed (2014), I will offer him this trade: Nickell Robey and a 5th rounder for Matt Barkley.

It's a win-win. Here what Jason Pieri had to say about Matt Barkley a couple years ago:

"Barkley plays a similar game to Drew Brees. He's best in an offense designed to his strengths, which are reading a complex defense and delivering an accurate throw in the short and intermediate ranges. Barkley played in a pro style offense for all four years...Barkley's accuracy is exceptional, particularly in the mid-ranges. He anticipates breaks well and throws receivers open...has very good pocket presence...He also can manipulate defenders with his eyes and body language. Barkley is short, but sturdy"

Barkley has three notable weaknesses: lack of height, average arm strength and average mobility."

I’ll take accuracy and reading defenses over mobility and arm strength any day. Barkley has been languishing on Chip Kelly's bench; he may be ripe for prying away. In the exchange, we lose our starting nickel back and a 5th rounder. Since I re-signed Searcy and Hughes, it seems only fair that the defense takes some kind of hit to help the offense.

So, what say you, JapanJohn for assistant GM? I'll send my email address to the BR editors if the team makes inquiries ;-)
