Buffalo Bills mandatory minicamp recap: day 1 storylines feature Josh Allen, Nathan Peterman

New, comments

Lots of exciting news from the quarterback competition Tuesday.

The Buffalo Bills held their first mandatory minicamp practice on Tuesday and because it was open to the media, there was a lot of coverage. It began with Sean McDermott’s press conference where he heaped praise on Josh Allen and Tre’Davious White before the team even took the field.

Here are the rest of the big storylines from day 1

Nathan Petermandropping dimes

If anyone thought Peterman wouldn’t get a fair shot at winning the starting job, they were wrong. He’s been consistently rotating in with the first-team offense and had a great practice today with the starters. Multiple reporters noted his accuracy today. He threw a beautiful touchdown pass to Cam Phillips for his biggest highlight.

Josh Allen works with ones

Also receiving some first-team reps was the rookie, who saw action with the starters for the first time (at least in a practice open to the media). McDermott said before practice that the rookie had earned the work with the starters.

Receiver rotation

The Bills can’t seem to find a pecking order at wide receiver. Undrafted WR Robert Foster began the day opposite Kelvin Benjamin but Brandon Reilly, Jeremy Kerley, and Andre Holmes each took reps with the starters. Zay Jones’s status up in the air, it’s anyone’s guess where it will end up.

Injury update

We knew about WR Zay Jones and TE Logan Thomas having knee surgery. Also off the field Tuesday was DT Tenny Palepoi (illness), WR Malachi Dupre (hamstring), and LB Matt Milano (hamstring). Defensive end Trent Murphy continues to be limited while returning from his ACL reconstruction.
