AFC East Roundup: After Tom Brady, who is the best player in the division?

New, comments

Brady won the MVP in 2017 and is one of the greatest ever. So who is next?

This week on the AFC East Roundup, we will be looking at who would be the best player in the division if it was not for Tom Brady. (He won the MVP in 2017 and is probably the greatest QB of all-time) We will be giving each team a representative and will be going on their on-field skill and production only. Any off-the-field antics will not be brought up in our discussion.

Buffalo Bills: LeSean McCoy

McCoy’s speed and elusiveness makes him difficult to tackle in space and makes him able to break off a big run at almost any time. Last season, he eclipsed 10,000 career rushing yards which puts him among the best running backs of all time. McCoy played a major part in the team breaking their playoff drought last year and given the state of the team’s passing game since he arrived in Buffalo, the Bills would be in an awful position if they were unable to hand the ball off to Shady.

New York Jets: Trumaine Johnson

The argument can be made that the best player on the Jets is a player that they just signed in the off season, Trumaine Johnson. Johnson is a shut down corner and was the prize free agent on the market for his position. His former team, the LA Rams, saw his value placing the franchise tag on him twice during his time with the team. Johnson is a player that is all over the field totaling over 50 tackles in each of the last three seasons and opposing quarterbacks are always hesitant to throw the ball to his side of the field.

Miami Dolphins: Cameron Wake

Wake is easily the best player on the Dolphins right now because of the impact that he makes up front on the line. Even when he is unable to get to the quarterback, it seems he is always in the backfield stopping the run or forcing the quarterback into a throw under duress. In three of the past four seasons he has recorded double digit sacks. During camp, the team said that he is looking to pick up right where he left off last season. Expect Wake to be near the top among the best pass rushers in the league next season.

New England Patriots: Rob Gronkowski

It is obvious that the Patriots have the best player in the division with Tom Brady. However, even with Brady aside, they still may have the best player in Gronkowski. Gronk has been a match-up nightmare ever since he joined the league and his numbers have remained strong. Even with only playing in 14 games last season, he still amassed more than 1000 receiving yards and eight touchdowns. He can do it all, lined up as a tight end or out wide at receiver, and teams have yet to come up with a solid strategy to stop him. The only thing that may stop Gronk is injuries as he has been dealing with a back injury that some thought could have possibly made him consider retiring at the end of last season.
