Speaking at his charity golf tournament on Monday, Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly announced that he will be receiving the Jimmy V Award at ESPN’s ESPY awards in July. The award, named after the late NC State basketball coach Jim Valvano, celebrates “a deserving member of the sporting world who has overcome great obstacles through perseverance and determination.”
Kelly recently underwent treatment for a third bout of cancer, after initially thinking he had the disease kicked in 2014 following radiation therapy and in 2013 after surgery. He returned from the treatment in good health, and was seen hitting the links alongside other celebrities during his tournament.
The award was previously awarded to another member of the Buffalo Bills, Kevin Everett, in 2008. Everett won the award following his courageous recovery from a life-threatening spinal injury suffered on a kickoff in the opener of the 2007 NFL season.
