Jim Kelly announces he is once again cancer-free

After a recent scare, the Bills’ Hall of Fame quarterback has a clean bill of health

Buffalo Bills Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly is cancer-free, his wife, Jill Kelly shared on social media from his hospital in New York City.

Kelly, who recently delivered a riveting and inspirational speech after being honored at the ESPY’s with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance, received the good news Wednesday in the form of clear results on an MRI and CT scans.

“Double thumbs up,” Jill Kelly posted on Instagram with a photo that showed Jim giving an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

“MRI and CT scans are clear. Still working through major pain management, but PRAISE THE LORD, no evidence of cancer. And can I just say, Jim’s brothers are amazing! I’ve watched them stand with Jim in good times and bad. I’ve witnessed a love between siblings that is remarkable. What a blessing to be part of such an amazing family. Thank you Pat, Ray, Ed, Danny and Kevin for being an example of what a loving, devoted family should look like. Add your humor and faith to the mix and we have everything we need. Love you guys so much!”

Kelly, who played his entire NFL career with the Bills, leading them to four straight Super Bowl appearances in the 1990s, was diagnosed with cancer in his upper jaw in 2013 before undergoing surgery.

Just one year later, the cancer returned, and Kelly underwent radiation and chemotherapy. Following that stint in the hospital, Kelly was diagnosed with MRSA.

In March of 2018, as Kelly was preparing for reconstructive surgery on his jaw to fix the pain he was experiencing from the 2013 surgery, doctors discovered cancer on the other side of his jaw. That was removed and the entire upper portion of his jaw was replaced.

In the week leading up to the ESPYs, Kelly had announced that he needed to return to his New York City doctors to address a recent medical issue, telling fans that “something came up” in his latest medical tests without going into more detail.

Thankfully for the Hall of Fame quarterback, his family, and all of Bills Mafia, Jim Kelly received a clean bill of health and is currently cancer-free.
