Wednesday morning marked the final day of training camp for the Buffalo Bills at St. John Fisher College and aside from being a lighter practice, it still gave us plenty of storylines to mull over before the regular season begins. "Pirate Day" was also rescheduled to today from yesterday due to inclement weather.
Fullback swap and injury updates
Backup fullback Zach Olstad suffered an ankle injury during Monday's practice and was waived by the Bills today. In his place, they signed Sam Rogers, a former 2017 sixth round pick of the Los Angles Rams who spent his rookie season on their practice squad.
DT Marquavius Lewis, WR Brandon Reilly and DE Trent Murphy did not practice today. Coach McDermott called Murphy's groin injury "nagging" and noted that they are still trying to figure out what is going on with it. That's certainly a situation to keep an eye on as Murphy has a history of injuries and the Bills are counting on him to be a starter.
WR Ray-Ray McCloud was a partial participant today and was wearing a red non-contact jersey. He did participate in some individual drills, but he sat out of team drills.
Finally, WR Kelvin Benjamin, who has had fairly light practices the past two days, was seen by Mike Rodak leaving the locker room after practice with an ice pack on his right knee. This could be just a precautionary measure by the team due to his past injuries. However, it is something worth noting going forward.
Quarterback situation still unclear
To open up practice, A.J. McCarron was with the ones, Josh Allen once again ran with the second unit, and Nathan Peterman led the third team. McDermott stated that Allen's past few days with the second team is a chance for them to evaluate his play with a different group of players around him.
When asked if any of the quarterbacks have separated from the rest, McDermott didn't give a straightforward answer and stated that "all three have had their moments, both good and bad" and pointed out that they have learned from their mistakes. He did say that he has announced to the team who will start Friday's preseason game against the Cleveland Browns but he refuses to reveal his choice to the public at the moment.
One interesting tidbit from McDermott is that they are "considering" starting QB Josh Allen in one of the preseason games. While nothing is set in stone, it will fun to speculate about when, and if, that will happen.
Odds and ends
- McDermott feels like WR Zay Jones has "matured" in his approach and appreciates his focus.
- WR Corey Coleman had a chance to work with the first-team today as Benjamin and Jones had an easier practice.
- Taron Johnson saw plenty of time with the ones at nickel corner, moreso today than previous practices.
- Keenan Robinson rotated with Matt Milano as the starting WLB.
