The Buffalo Bills were back at St. John Fisher for their Sunday practice leading up to their first preseason game on Thursday against the Carolina Panthers at New Era Field. Here are some highlights:

Zay Jones returns

After missing the first eight practices, Jones returns to the field in a non-contact jersey. Jones was being brought along slowly after a knee surgery in May. Bills’ head coach Sean McDermott has said that they will be careful with Jones in bringing him back to the field. Jones doesn’t appear to be wearing any heavy support on his knee at this point in time. He spoke with the media following practice.

Injury Update

Defensive end Trent Murphy wasn't at today’s practice while dealing with a groin injury he suffered last week. Receiver Kaelin Clay missed today’s practice after leaving Friday’s practice due to a hard hit to the ribs on a pass route that resulted in him having to be helped off the field. Rookie training camp standout, Cam Phillips, is the third and final Bill to miss practice. He also exited Friday’s practice, but with a groin injury.

QB’s so unimpressive, Daboll gets fired up

Throughout the day, none of the quarterbacks had good performances in practice with each of them throwing an interception. After Josh Allen made a nice throw over the middle, he followed it with an interception near the sideline after some miscommunication with rookie receiver, Austin Proehl. Daboll expressed his displeasure with Proehl, according to Nate Geary of WGR, as it appeared he didn't even look for the ball.

Sean McDermott unhappy with Benjamin’s comments

In an interview with Tim Graham of The Athletic, Bills number one receiver Kelvin Benjamin criticized the Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton, saying that he wasn't happy to be there and they weren't a fit right from the start. McDermott wasn't happy with Benjamin’s comments.

“There’s a time and a place for comments like that and this was not one of them,” said McDermott

McDermott said he has spoken to Benjamin about his comments.

Other notes

  • LeSean went down hard on the sideline after making a nice catch. He walked on the sideline talking to a trainer while holding his hip. He appeared to be okay after that.
  • With Trent Murphy out, Shaq Lawson got another chance to start and was able to put some pressure on AJ McCarron with the first-team.
  • Robert Foster has taken a back seat to other receivers, even with Cam Phillips and Kaelin Clay gone for today. Sal Capaccio of WGR550 says that Kelvin Benjamin, Jeremy Kerley, Andre Holmes, Brandon Reilly, Rod Streater and Malachi Dupre have all taken reps ahead of Foster.
