Would you rather?

Spend this year or hold for next year?

Good afternoon Bills Mafia,

I woke up this morning and for some reason I thought to myself instead of focusing on my college basketball teams upcoming playoff game, applying for jobs when I graduate in three month and really just my life goals in general, the better idea would be to wonder if the Bills would be smarter to be conservative this free agency and save more money for next year. I woke up to an article this morning about how much money (~$79 mil) the Bills have to spend in this free agency versus how much they could have next year (~$123 mil) if they didn't spend crazy this year. So this got me thinking about whether or not the Bills should focus more on the draft this year, getting guys that fit their "system" and holding off on free agents if next year's free agent class looks better. My original thought was make a post asking if someone would do all the research for me and instead I decided not to be lazy and make my first post.

I am going to start by listing the top 100 possible free agents for this year, not to beat the topic to death or anything. There are some free agents that I wish that we could sign for the right price only hoping that all the free agents receive our offers and no other teams offers so they have no choice but to sign with us, even though that can't happen. I will also list potential free agents for next year and at the end if I do this correctly there should be a poll asking what you would value more if you were Brandon Beane and Sean McDermott. I will also list my opinion on what I wish we would do over the next two years, which of course is a complete wish and far from reality.

My Take

If you have stuck with me to this point I'm assuming you scrolled through the length of the article and I apologize for it being so long, just wanted to be accurate.

If I was General Manager of the Bills this year I would be strategic in my spending and draft day decisions. I would make only two big signings in free agency this year and a handful of other impactful signings. In the top 10 list for this year I am only trying to sign Grady Jarrett, DT, Falcons. I am not a fan of the Star signing from last year so this would be a move to try and get away from Star. His cap hit would hurt if we cut or traded him but I think it would be worth it if we save money but not spending much this offseason. My second signings would be either Trent Brown or Daryl Williams for Offensive Tackle. Only for the right price though, under $12 mil for Brown and under $8 mil for Williams. My only move at wide receiver in free agency would be for Adam Humphries or Donte Moncrief and Jesse James at Tight End. I'm choosing to pass on any of the other big named free agents and signing one year deals to a cornerback like Pierre Desir, Center Ryan Kalil, and maybe even sign Thomas Davis for OLB.

My 2019 Draft would consist of 1st round Jonah Williams OT, 2nd round Marquise Brown WR, and 3rd round Beau Benzschawel G. My 2019 offseason is to set up for making bigger splashes in the 2020 offseason. I would focus on trying to sign Tre Whites counterpart Xavien Howard, Re-sign Jerry Hughes, a top running back in the draft or free agency to replace McCoy, and any other signings that are an area of need next offseason.

I appreciate everyone reading my post, hope it wasn't too long but this was my take. Save money this year, draft the pieces we need to help keep us (Josh Allen) healthy and sign cheap rentals. Focus on adding stud players next free agency and add best players available in the draft. Now let me know what you think!

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
