2019 QB Board and Strategy

The QB position is the most important position for an NFL team. If you want to win a Superbowl it is almost impossible to do so without an elite to very good one playing for your team.

My belief is you need to scout the player. What are their traits? You go through and see what you have in each area you can measure. Then you need to create a working model of everything the prospect brings to the table and ask a simple question, "Will this player work in the NFL?".

I also am not a fan of drafting backups. If you can't imagine the guy ever starting save your ammo for another position. You can find backup QB's for free.

1st Round Talent

Kyler Murray-ESPN is trying to explain the possible trade of Josh Rosen and the selection of Kyler as a "system-fit". No, Kyler Murray will be drafted #1 overall because he is an incredible QB prospect. Special thrower that is the most ready to excel since Patrick Mahomes. If you don't have a franchise QB take him #1. Will soon be one of the premier players in the entire NFL and will make the team that drafts him immediately relevant.

Will Grier-The mock drafters and internet scouts list him as the 6th, 7th, or 8th best QB in this draft. I rate him as QB #2 and a guy that also has rare traits. This guy sees the field and knows how to attack you. Whoever lands Grier has the chance to win the 2019 draft. I would start to think about getting him after the Bills pick at 9. I think the story of where Grier lands will be one of the key storylines as I watch the 2019 draft.

Daniel Jones-Now this is where the dice rolls come in. People that say the draft is a crap shoot? Sure, and players like this make that case. Good, then bad, then good. Ugly duck throwing and has odd blind spots in his game. However, if I had to rank Haskins, Lock, and Jones I would try this one out first. I don't think Jones is even close to Grier or Murray but would place Jones as a guy to consider after pick 20 in the 1st round.

2nd Round

Drew Lock-He was on ESPN yesterday and they were drooling over Lock throwing at his Pro Day. Is he Brett Favre? Maybe Mahomes? No and no. Lock was one of the prospects I liked a year ago and was eager to see him take the next step. Instead, he decided he wanted to be a "Pro-Style" QB. A new coach was hired and they messed with his mechanics. Now he makes more exciting throws but now misses wildly more due to greater inaccuracy. He now looks like Brock Osweiler. I am not drafting this guy if this is the plan. Late 2nd round but he is Red for Stop.

3rd Round

Dwayne Haskins-The darling of traditional scouting. Bucky Brooks loves him and places him over Kyler Murray. And he checks some boxes. Big, smart, plus arm. So what's the issue here? If you watch how Haskins got his numbers lots of screens and throws to lightning fast guys running drag routes. Limited mobility, long load time, slow eyes. Can't do much when moved off platform, can't throw on the run. Throws the ball with a wobble upon release. This is roadkill in the current NFL. He can make every throw but does not. You just take 3-4 plus plays a game and you can see the good. Drafting Haskins you are hoping that a lot of things improve and what we see in the NFL over and over is that this concept seldom works out. Place him in the 3rd round but still have a Red for stop.

Now the special awards:

The 2019 Rag Arm award goes to the player who should not be drafted but will be anyway. That goes to Ryan Finley. He can't throw but could be a good locker room presence.

The Dak Prescott award goes to the player who I see becoming an NFL starter after the first few rounds. That player is Easton Stick. 49-3 record at the same college that Carson Wentz went to. He has some elite traits and no major drawbacks. Elite pocket presence and mobility and can throw off platform. So I actually would rather take him than a Haskins or Lock. Go get him to start the 3rd round.

Just another great fan opinion shared on the pages of BuffaloRumblings.com.
