The Speed Option: the Pittsburgh Steelers come to town

Fresh off their first loss of the season

The Buffalo Bills will play in front of a national TV audience for the second week in a row. This week they’ll be hosting the Pittsburgh Steelers who are coming off their only loss of the season. Let’s get to know these bunch of yinzers.

2020 Summary

The Pittsburgh Steelers were sole owners of the league’s best record—were being the operative word. On the same night the Bills handily beat the San Francisco 49ers, the Steelers struggled and loss to Alex Smith and the Washington Football Team. They’re now tied with the Kansas City Chiefs at 11-1.

Head Coach

Mike Tomlin is still running the ship down in Pittsburgh. 2020 is his 14th season leading the Steelers. He has a 144-75 (0.657 W-L percent) regular-season record, two AFC championships, and one Super Bowl. As I am sure you will hear on Sunday night, he and Bills head coach Sean McDermott were teammates in college at William & Mary.

Offensive Coordinator

Randy Fichtner runs the offense for Tomlin. He in his third season calling plays. He has been with the Steelers since Tomlin took over the team. He started as their wide receivers coach, moved to quarterbacks coach, and eventually added the offensive coordinator gig to his resume in 2018. His offense is currently ranked 21st in yards per game and eighth in points per game.

Defensive Coordinator

For the sixth season Keith Butler is the defensive coordinator in the Steel City. He has been with the Steelers since 2003. His first 12 seasons with the franchise were spent coaching linebackers. The Steelers’ defense is currently ranked third in yards per game allowed and first in points per game allowed.
