Takeaways: Buffalo Bills put exclamation point on AFC East championship victory

WHAT A GAME!

The Buffalo Bills throttled the Denver Broncos on national TV Saturday. It was a welcome and (dare I say) expected victory that keeps Buffalo alive for the number-two seed in the AFC.

Here are my takeaways from the game:

What a throw

I typed this phrase so many times today. Josh Allen was dealing for most of the game. He finished the game 28-of-40 for 359 yards and two touchdown passes. He had two rushing touchdowns, too, with 33 yards on the ground, but his arm was simply outstanding. His decisions were great. He just plays so well and it’s so much fun to watch him. Drink it in.

Free play Josh Allen

Twice in the first quarter, Josh Allen drew the Broncos offsides with a hard count. Twice, he went deep after he saw the flag. The first one was picked and the second was a couple inches from being a 40-yard gain to Stefon Diggs but out of bounds. It’s a free play and Allen is situationally aware to get it done.

Stefon Diggs, man

Watching Diggs reach out and pluck a ball from the air with his sure hands is so majestic. His routes are crisp and the separation he gets is outstanding. Tough catches, easy catches, blocking, and everything else; it’s a joy to have him on the team.

Two fumbles this year for Andre Roberts

For a Pro Bowl returner, Roberts hasn’t protected the ball like he should. His second return fumble of the year came at an inopportune time. With the Bills up 14-0 and forcing a three-and-out, Roberts signaled fair catch and the ball went through his arms. It gave Denver great field position and they scored to make it 14-7. Instead of Buffalo putting in a second-quarter dagger, he opened the door. He also muffed a punt last week, but was able to recover. Micah Hyde returned the remaining punts in the game.

Five goal-line penalties

The Bills scored three touchdowns on their final third-quarter drive but none of them counted. Flags on flags on flags made the Bills kick a field goal to push the game out of reach. Earlier in the game, they had a 1st-and-goal from the 30 but still managed to score the touchdown. It felt like more of a ref thing than egregious penalties.

Injury concerns

The Bills had several players leave the game with injuries. Stefon Diggs was carted off the sideline with a foot injury but came back shoeless to celebrate with the team. Levi Wallace left the game but returned. Tre’Davious White left the game with a stinger that thankfully wasn’t worse. Cole Beasley was gimpy after some catches but it didn’t slow him between the whistles. A.J. Epenesa is being evaluated for a head injury.

Positivity dump

Josh Allen has 4000 yards passing. Stefon Diggs set the team record for catches and a had a career high in yards. They had more than 500 yards of offense again. They had a fumble return touchdown. The Bills completely outclassed the Broncos and they are approaching team records all over the place.

CHAMPS

I was 12 the last time this happened.
