The Buffalo Bills traded their 22nd overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft to the Minnesota Vikings as part of a package to add wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Minnesota, for their part, turned around and used the pick on LSU wide receiver Justin Jefferson. Which would you rather have?
Diggs has established himself as a legitimate threat in the NFL, increasing from just over 1000 yards in 2018 to 1130 yards in 2019 and averaging more than 70 yards per game during that time. He has 30 touchdowns in his five NFL seasons. He’s entering the prime of his career.
Yes, he has a $12 million price tag every season—a number considerably higher than the rookie will make. He’s also been vocal about things that made him unhappy in Minnesota. Does that make him a competitor or a diva? It depends on which fan base you ask.
By all accounts, Jefferson is a first-round steal for Minnesota, and he was projected to get taken five to eight picks higher than he was selected. SB Nation’s Dan Kadar graded the pick an “A+” and had this to say about the prospect:
He torched defenses from the slot last year at LSU to the tune of 111 receptions for 1,540 yards. It’s true, the Vikings have Adam Thielen in the slot. But Jefferson’s game lends itself to playing more on the outside than he did in college.
Pete Prisco from CBS also gave the pick an “A”, saying “he’s not Diggs, but he’s also not going to complain every play like Diggs did.”
While Diggs will make $12 million in one season for Buffalo, Jefferson will make $12 million total over the course of his first four seasons in the league.
But in an uncertain time, when we have no idea when teams will be able to get together, Jefferson is going to be behind the eight ball picking up the offense and adjusting to the NFL. Yes, he comes from the SEC but there is still a substantial leap from LSU to the Vikings.
This is just the first time we’re going to have this conversation, but which haul would you rather have right now, Bills fans?
Which would you rather have RIGHT NOW?
