The Buffalo Bills already picked up the fifth-year option on All-Pro cornerback Tre’Davious White, buying the team more time to work out a long-term contract extension. But there are two other fellow members of the Class of 2017—linebacker Matt Milano and left tackle Dion Dawkins—who are entering the final years of their rookie deals.
On the latest episode of the Billieve Podcast, host John Boccacino and co-host Jamie D’Amico play the role of general manager Brandon Beane and, assuming Beane can only extend one of those two, try to figure out which is most deserving of an extension.
Beane has already said he is interested in extending both Milano and Dawkins, but the Bills also will be looking to secure contract extensions with White and quarterback Josh Allen in the not-too-distant future, meaning the Bills will have some difficult financial decisions to make.
After running down the pros and cons of extending Milano and Dawkins, our podcasters discuss the salary cap ramifications of locking in both (a tip of the hat to Editor-in-Chief, Matt Warren for breaking down a projected extension of $12-$14 million per year for Milano, and north of $14 million per season for Dawkins) earlier in the offseason.
We then offer our thoughts on who is more deserving of the contract extension, if Beane only has the financial wherewithal to offer one extension.
Plus, we discuss if there’s anything left for Beane and head coach Sean McDermott to prove before they receive their own contract extensions from co-owners Terry and Kim Pegula.
