Josh Allen’s playoff run came during father’s COVID-19-related hospital stay

His dad won’t be at the game on Sunday.

Matt Warren is Associate Director of NFL coverage for SB Nation and previously covered the Bills for Buffalo Rumblings for more than a decade.

Much has been made about how well Josh Allen played following the loss of his grandmother earlier this season. More than $1 million was raised for the Oishei Children’s Hospital in Buffalo as a result of the relationship between the community and their quarterback. In an article from the Los Angeles Times this weekend, we found out he’s been dealing with more family concerns over the last few weeks as his father, Joel, spent time in the hospital with COVID-19 and pneumonia.

“Joel won’t be at Sunday’s game because he’s recovering from the coronavirus and a bout with pneumonia that landed him in the hospital this month,” wrote Sam Farmer in the wide-ranging piece profiling Allen’s hometown and backstory.

Josh Allen’s mother, LaVonne, is heading to Kansas City with a group of family members, though.

The piece is a great read, discussing how Allen would drive around in his truck to pick up teammates for practice from the agricultural fields they were working and speaking with his uncle, Todd, about his play growing up.
