Buffalo Bills release cornerback E.J. Gaines

The veteran CB opted out of the 2020 season

It was reported by ESPN’s Field Yates that the Buffalo Bills have waived cornerback E.J. Gaines on Friday. Gaines was one of 69 players across the NFL to opt out of the 2020 season.

Gaines was expected to provide depth for the Bills in 2020, with the potential to challenge Levi Wallace, Josh Norman or Taron Johnson for a starting spot. With Gaines now off the roster, the Bills are somewhat thin at cornerback heading into the offseason. Tre’Davious White remains under contract, as does Johnson—but both Wallace (restricted) and Norman (unrestricted) are free agents.

The other cornerbacks under contract for the Bills at this time include Dane Jackson, Siran Neal, and Cam Lewis. Jackson is the only one of the three who would be seen as an option to play on the outside, while Neal and Lewis are more suited for the slot. This is a position group that will be worth monitoring throughout free agency and the draft.
