NFL salary cap: Contract details for slot CB Taron Johnson extension with Buffalo Bills

The only time Buffalo Bills slot cornerback Taron Johnson has left the field in 2021 was because the team was blowing out their opponent or he was hurt. When Johnson is healthy, he’s a 100-percent-snap guy. The Bills rewarded the soon-to-be free agent with a three-year contract extension earlier in October.

Last week, details emerged of the deal courtesy of Joe Buscaglia at The Athletic so we’re breaking down the deal right now.

The deal is for three more years in addition to the final year of his rookie contract in 2021. It’s for $24 million with about $10.5 million fully guaranteed including a $4 million singing bonus. They put a $4.5 million option bonus in 2022 to spread out over the remaining three years of the deal as a salary cap maneuver and that’s how I’m going to lay out the contract below. It’s been a common tactic for Brandon Beane recently in addition to converting large roster bonuses or salary into new pro-rated signing bonus money.

He’ll make $5.2 million this year, $6.5 million in 2022, $6.75 million in 2023, and $7.7 million in 2024.

The contract means he will be on the Bills through at least the 2022 season before another decision needs to be made. If he’s cut at the end of 2022, Buffalo will have paid him $9 million in new money for the one-year extension.
