Happy 716 Day, Buffalo Bills fans. July 16 is celebrated locally every year because the area code for Western New York is 716. This year as part of a new initiative, the Buffalo Bills Foundation and Buffalo Sabres Foundation have teamed up for Give 716 to raise money for local non-profits.
“The goal of Give 716 is simple, to unite Bills and Sabres fans with the Western New York community in an epic day of giving!” says the organization website. “It also aims to bring awareness and develop deeper, more meaningful connections between nonprofits providing the vital supporting services to our community.”
Throughout the day today, local business are matching donations from the public as well as providing grants on their own. Dave & Adams, Highmark BCBS, KeyBank, M&T Bank, and Wegmans are the leading sponsors. The event actually kicked off on July 15 at 7:16 p.m. with Bills head coach Sean McDermott and his wife matching all donations up to $20,000. $500 grants were awarded throughout the night.
