Four Downs: Reggie Gilliam is trending up for the Bills

The second-year fullback is making an impact in the preseason

NFL: Buffalo Bills at Chicago Bears Jon Durr-USA TODAY Sports

It was an impressive Saturday for the Buffalo Bills, as they dominated the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field. This edition of Four Downs has some thoughts from the game, including a look at Reggie Gilliam, Gregory Rousseau, and Carlos Basham Jr.

Gilliam could be a lock for the 53-man roster

One of the bigger surprises of the 2021 Bills preseason has been the usage and play of fullback Reggie Gilliam. The second-year player out of Toledo was incredibly effective on Saturday, with eight rushes for 24 yards and two touchdowns. While Gilliam has officially shifted to fullback this year, he has the flexibility to make an impact at tight end and on special teams. This flexibility makes him an intriguing option for the 53-man roster. Gilliam remains a fun “one to watch” as part of a loaded Bills offense this preseason.

A closer look at Rousseau and Basham

One of my favorite breakdowns from Saturday’s game comes courtesy of the NFL Network’s Brian Baldinger. The evaluation on Gregory Rousseau and Carlos Basham Jr. is certainly worth the watch.

Pod of the Week

One of my favorites listens this week came from Jamie D. and Big Newt, as the co-hosts spent the time to evaluate multiple position groups for the Bills. I love the rapport that these two have, and welcome the lighthearted approach they take to each group. if you have not caught the episode yet, you can listen to it here.

Not expecting to see starters on Saturday

I know many fans are hoping to see a glimpse of the starters at Highmark Stadium on Saturday against the Green Bay Packers, but I would be surprised to see them take the field. There has been no announcement on what head coach Sean McDermott will do, and I have no inside information, this is just simply my hunch based on how the team has handled the first two preseason game. McDermott is expected to announce his intentions for Josh Allen and the other starters during his next press conference later this week.
