Buffalo Bills storylines to watch against Green Bay Packers

Matt Warren is Associate Director of NFL coverage for SB Nation and previously covered the Bills for Buffalo Rumblings for more than a decade.

The Buffalo Bills’ preseason finale is here and there are several storylines to watch as the game kicks off Saturday. Here are the ones we’re looking at:

Don’t get hurt

This can be said about any preseason game, but especially this one. Buffalo exited their Week 2 preseason game against the Chicago Bears with a lot of injuries. If those depth players start to stack up in the training room even more, it could throw the final 53-man roster into chaos. Josh Allen and a large chunk of the starters are also going to be receiving their first action of the preseason, which is another reason we really don’t want to see injuries.

Marquez Stevenson

Isaiah McKenzie is in a sling and could be out for multiple weeks. Can Stevenson play his way onto the back end of the roster in this game with some nice kick and punt returns or even some well-timed plays in the passing game? Stevenson himself just returned from injury, so he could be limited, but especially with the number of unvaccinated players in the Bills’ WR room, keeping Stevenson is making more sense every day.

Bobby Hart

Hart has looked not good all training camp and preseason. Is he even worth keeping on the practice squad as a “break in case of emergency” veteran? He’ll have his last chance this weekend.

COVID-19 quarantines

Will any of the four COVID-19 mandatory quarantine players return for the game? DT Vernon Butler could use a final burst to make the roster even if Gabriel Davis, Cole Beasley, and Star Lotulelei are on the safe side of the bubble.

53rd man roster battle

Isaiah Hodgins, Marquez Stevenson, Darryl Johnson, Harrison Phillips (though he’s injured), Tyrel Dodson, Rachad Wildgoose, Cam Lewis, Damar Hamlin, and Josh Thomas. Jake Fromm? These players aren’t just competing at their respective positions, they are competing with each other for the final roster spots.
