Buffalo Bills receiving trade phone calls about defensive linemen

Matt Warren is Associate Director of NFL coverage for SB Nation and previously covered the Bills for Buffalo Rumblings for more than a decade.

Buffalo Bills general manager Brandon Beane was able to sit in on the team’s broadcast during the third quarter against the Green Bay Packers. He shared an interesting tidbit about the phone calls he’s been receiving over the last week as roster cutdowns begin to loom.

Beane said he’s been receiving and is expecting to receive more calls, but the position group that’s generating the most interest is the defensive line, especially at defensive end.

The Bills took two defensive ends in the first two rounds of the 2021 NFL Draft and another in the 2020 NFL draft. With Greg Rousseau and A.J. Epenesa playing so well in the preseason, the team could look to unload a veteran with guaranteed money on his deal like Mario Addison or Efe Obada.

Veteran captain Jerry Hughes is probably not going anywhere, and the young players won’t be leaving, either. Buffalo isn’t going to unload second rounder Carlos Basham, Jr. and they might want to keep special teams ace Darryl Johnson Jr.

Also at play here is the defensive tackle position. Harrison Phillips is dinged up, but if he’s able to return soon, Vernon Butler could be on the trading block, too.

We know Beane loves making trades and getting something for nothing, and they do have incredible depth at the position.
