The Buffalo Bills on Friday processed a little contractual move to free up salary cap space. Entering the week with less than $1.5 million in cap space, the Bills converted part of safety Jordan Poyer’s salary into a signing bonus to more than double their available 2021 cap space. The news comes to us from Field Yates.
Instead of paying $5.2 million to Poyer over the course of the season, the Bills gave him a check for that amount this week. Most of that salary was already guaranteed. The move allows them to spread out the cap hit over the two seasons of his deal, pushing $2.6 million in cap commitments into 2022. Poyer’s cap hit in 2021 goes from $7.85 million to $5.25 million. In 2022, his cap hit stands at $10.3 million now where it was at $7.7 million. It probably makes it a bit more likely we see a one or two-year Poyer extension in the 2022 offseason.
With the additional cap space, Buffalo has roughly $4 million in available cap space. Instead of having the second-least amount of space in the NFL, they are about 12th-least now. This certainly doesn’t mean a roster move is imminent, but now general manager Brandon Beane has the room he needs to sign a free agent or two in response to an injury.
