Has the KC Defense Actually Improved?

A common early theme I have seen this week is that the Chiefs are a vastly different team then the one we faced earlier this season both on offense and defense. While I agree that the offense has found it's groove again, and is not to be taken lightly, I still wonder if their defense is really much better.

After giving up 29+ point in 6 of their first 7 games, KC went on a nice run holding their next 7 opponents under 20 points, before finishing out the year allowing 24+ point in 3 of their final 4 games.

On the surface there is clear improvement in all defensive metrics for KC in the second half of the year. However, one common theme throughout the entire year is KC really struggling against elite QBs. Not exactly surprising as most teams struggle vs elite QBs which is why they are considered elite.

Kansas City had 4 games against elite level QBs this year and were 1-3 in those contests, with the lone win coming in OT against the Chargers in their second matchup. These also occurred during the beginning, middle, and end of the season, not just during a bad stretch at the start of the season.

If Buffalo can match what Kansas City typically allows against elite QBs they should be in good position to come out of KC with a win.

I believe Buffalo will struggle a bit on defense against Kansas City because they are better than what we saw early this year, but I think their defense will struggle much more to contain Buffalo's offense in this one, and will ultimately be the deciding factor in this game.
